if the hard drive is good, you should be able to install it in to another computer as a second drive without to much difficulty.

Yeah if the drive is still good your golden. If not, you may still be able to get data off of it yourself depending on it's problems. If it's really screwed, you can send it out to a data recovery specialist, but they are expensive.

The most important thing is to keep the drive (even if the shop tells you its dead) so that you have some options.

          Re: Data Recovery?

The Dell probably uses SATA connections and the old drive is probably PATA connector. You can buy adapters on the net, or you can just try putting it in another computer that has a PATA connector.

Get an external HD enclosure, copy the files to your other HD, then take your old drive out and return it.

Yeah, if its your older drive chances are its IDE. Most newmachines still have IDE connections (for things like the CD rom) so you can piggy back off of that. Your P/S should still have the older 4 pin power connections on at least one rail too...If not, memory express sells every adapter you need and they're cheap. Just bring the drive with you and they'll help ya out.

An external enclosure isnt a bad idea either but you should be able to do it for cheaper

If you have another drive you want to put the stuff onto then you could probably just plug your old drive into the CD/DVD cable and do a direct copy over. if you want files transfering to DVD or somthing then let me know, I think i live local to you so i can give you some advice if you want or do it for you if you need.

Drop me a mail if you want more help.

                    Re: Data Recovery?

if the connectors match the ones being used for your CD-ROM you can plug it into there and use it as a slave drive. Make sure you've got it set as a slave drive, there are jumpers you need to put in the right position.

a lot of the older hard drives also don't work as a USB external drive either, so you might want to check that out before you start blowing money on buying up everything for that.

                    good luck

memory express has a usb-ide converter ill pick up then i should be able to hook it up as the slave i guess in this computer just to get the files
