it is, same motor as our V50 (well as an option anyway they may offer it in a NA version).

It will be offered with the 2.4i and the T5 engines. It looks to possibly be a really nice car if they offer all sorts of combinations, like T5 w/AWD or w/o, 6spd shifter, etc.

I test drove the V50 T5 AWD last weekend and I was definately not impressed. Its slugish, and the auto tranny is nasty/slow at gear changes.

Then I drove both the A3, 2.0T and the 3.2. The 2.0T is faster. And the A3 was much more connected to the road than the V50. V50's steering is set in concrete where the A3's was light and responsive.

I love the looks of the C30 and hope they fix the problems I found in the v50 respective to the A3. The C30 and A3 are being sold to the exact same demographic IMO, so Volvo is going to have to try extra hard to make the C30 "hot".

Interesting, I actually liked the feel of the V50 about the same as the A3. I have the 6spd though, the auto, although much better than the previous model is still pretty bad.

I found the Volvo has a bit more "feel" than the audi honestly. The steering may feel heavier but felt it connected me to the road moreso than the A3.

Oh yea, and the V50 AWD feels a little slower than the 2.0T (we cross shopped with the jetta) but in FWD trim I'd say it's a wash. I think if the 2.0T was hooked to a quattro system the volvo would destroy it.

I feel the same way totally. When driving the V50 in a turn and going on the gas... the front turns in nicely but then I can "feel" the back shift-and-squat. In turns, the A3 seemed much more predictable and neutral both in the 3.2quatro, and the fwd2.0t.

I guess I should drive the S40 T5 to get an idea what the C30 will be like... I think they are scheduled to arrive in marchish?

I like it. Although I change my mind about every 2 weeks as to whether I will get another Volvo after this one.

We might just get a V70 or something then i'll get something different.

Another thing that worries me about the C30 is there are some SERIOUS S40 and V50 lemons out there, I hope those problems don't plague the C30 or it will really hurt this endeavour.

Edit: Painted flairs and skirts looks a zillion times better!!!

its on the same platform as the new focus in europe. Also another interesting thing is that the new focus out there got the 5 cyl turbo volvo engine. Too bad that one isn't heading out this way

Actually I think he mean't the Car (Ford Focus). The C30 is coming and the engine (2.5 inline 5 turbo) is already here in the S40/V50/C70.

I'd love to see the Euro Focus come here with that motor as you could get great performance without having to shell out for the Volvo.

So far this chassis is used on the S40, V50, C70, C30, the mini land rover (forget the name), Mazda 3, Euro Ford Focus and there are rumours that an XC50 is on it's way also (very probable after they made the mini land rover already).

Needless to say, Ford is getting a lot of use out of this platform. There have been adjustments to all however for different needs (The Volvo for example has reinforcements to the chassis and sides for safety/impact protection, and the land rover has been strengthend to handle the extra weight and abuse that comes from being an SUV, etc.).

P.S. Blair, the last picture in your pic post above WAS a C30 with painted skirts and fender flairs but now appears to be a pic of the interior of the IROC, not sure what's up with that.

I have never understood why the Euro focus is different over the NA version, which there have been new versions spotted testing including a coupe.

Some news, a hybrid perhaps coming soon.

Swedish automaker Volvo is developing a hybrid drive system for its all-new C30 hatchback. The system is a series hybrid, meaning the combustion engine never powers the wheels directly, but instead turns a generator to power an electric motor.

Rather than a gasoline engine, the car will use a diesel powerplant, according to Germany's Autobild. The car will be capable of traveling about 45 miles on batteries alone. It will also feature plug-in capability, meaning owners can charge their vehicle at home.

A concept version of the car will debut at the Michelin Challenge Bibendum in Shanghai later this year, allow Vovlo engineers to put the car through its paces in a demanding situation.

It's not known when a production version will debut, but the report indicates Volvo is serious about bringing a hybrid C30 to showrooms.
