According to a new report, BMW isn't the only one messing around with tri-turbo systems. The Porsche 911 Turbo currently employs a 3.8-liter, horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine with a twin-turbo, but according to a report by Autocar they are set to upgrade it to a tri-turbo induction system.
Details of the complex system was revealed in patent applications by the sports car maker. It uses three separate turbochargers, two of which work similar to the twin-turbo units in current models whilst the third is mounted close to the engine to boost response at lower speeds.
It will allow the Porsche 911 Turbo to boost its raw power output to 525bhp ( 391 kW / 532 PS ) and we could then expect the higher performing Turbo S to pump out more than 550bhp ( 410 kW / 557 PS ). Following its successful introduction, the same system is expected to be spread to the 911 GT2 and 911 GT2 RS.
