  • 2013 Porsche Boxster

Just as leaked photos were starting to infiltrate the web, Porsche stemmed their impact by releasing the full monty of the all-new third generation Porsche Boxster (981). The open-top two-seater is lighter and leaner with a completely revised chassis and 15 percent more fuel-efficient engines.

Design-wise, the new Boxster receives revamped styling with shorter overhangs, significantly forward-shifted windscreen, flatter silhouette and edgier character lines.

The new Boxster uses a new lightweight body with a longer wheelbase, a wider track and larger wheels. Combined with its mid-engine layout, driving dynamics are enhanced even further than the current 987 generation.

Both Boxster and Boxster S are using direct injection flat-six engines which feature new technologies such as electrical system recuperation, thermal management and start/stop function.

In the base Boxster the 2.7 liter engine produces 265 HP (261 bhp / 195 kW), which is 10 HP more than its larger displacement predecessor. The Boxster S gets a bigger 3.4-liter engine delivering 315 HP (311 bhp / 232 kW). That is 5 HP more than the previous version.

As before, six-speed gearbox is standard for both while the seven-speed PDK double clutch trans is optional. Fuel consumption for the Boxster with PDK is 7.7l/100km (30.5 mpg US) and the Boxster S is 8.0l/100km (29.4 mpg US). Full throttle performance sprints to 100 km/h in the Boxster is 5.7 seconds and the Boxster S is 5.0 seconds.

Other roadster features include new electro-mechanical power steering, fully electric fabric top, raked center console inspired by the Carrera GT, optional Sport Chrono Package, dynamic transmission mounts and Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear axle differential lock.

The Boxster and Boxster S launch in Germany on 14.04.2012 with a list price of 48,291 euro and 59,120 euro (19% VAT incl), respectively.

In the U.S. market launch will be early summer with a list price of $49,500 for the Boxster and $60,900 for the Boxster S not including a $950 destination charge.

A LOT of car for the money. I can never get over the vert factor though. It looks very sweet, and would look even better with a hot blonde driving it.

Starting to look like the 918 and Carrera GT influence finally making it to the Boxster and I agree I think it looks amazing. I personally have no problem with the 'stigma' just not sure I am a convertible person, but the Cayman should be coming soon too and we can hope it will look as good with the roof.
