  • Anyone drive a porsche 944 on here?

I'm looking at selling my Mk4 jetta vr6 in the next few years as I hate newer cars and want to go back to something a little more simple that doesn't require my laptop to diagnose a burnt out light bulb. I've always loved the look of these cars and since they are on the borderline of what most people consider a porsche they are pretty decently priced.

What have your experiences been with these vehicles, how mechanic friend are they? The engines look dead simple but they could be hiding something. From the cutaway diagram I have of the car it looks like the tranny is rear mounted, does this present any significant problems for transmission/clutch maintenance.

what should I look out for when looking at them. Thanks!

Simon had a 944 cabriolet when I first met him like 5 years ago, he'd be able to comment....

This is second hand knowledge but...

I believe that the car cost a fair bit to maintain, and was not super easy to fix. I remember hunting for special tools in the middle of the night one time, driving from auto parts store to auto parts store to find some crazy kind of wrench or socket.

Looked sweet though, they are cool cars.

heh, my first car was 83 944..

If you can afford it, try to get the late 80's model, possibly even a turbo one. First few years had absolution 0 options. No power window, no power steering, no cruise control .. etc..etc..

They are not too bad to maintain. (Not any worse than Audi's) It was first car I learn how to do stuff on. change wheel bearings, a-arm, joints, etc.. It's was fun little car but personally, 4 cyl wasn't all that fast. Handled pretty well. My sunroof leaked every time it rained. AC didn't work, no radio... etc.. I got soaked first time I went though a car wash. My steering wheel broke so I put a momo one on it... ah good times...

Porsche does have a pretty specific set of tools necessary to do the work on them. My dad is a 911 person, and we have an absurd number of porsche only tools in the garage.

I had an S2 cab, it wasn't cheap to maintain but I was in a condo where I couldnt do my own work.. A local porsche mechanic told me once that you are looking about 2x maintainance cost of a 911. For a 944 turbo, about 4x!

The S2 goes OK and handles well, 968 would be better and I bet you could still find one for a reasonable amount.

The turbo can be made into quite a monster but note the crazy expected maint. costs.

Basically though, the 911 is faster, has the extremely addictive rear engine feel (if you like pushing the car and feeling challenged), sounds way better, cheaper/easier to maintain, easier to get parts.. so I would highly recommend thinking about shopping for a good 911 with your price point setting the age.
