Smart Car Questions

I know this will mostly be pointed towards Blair, but I had a couple questions.

Some of you may have seen the email circulating around with pictures of a "Smart car" being completely destroyed by a semi with a caption like "Please cancel the order on my Smart Car". The pictures look to be from Europe but there were some things that weren't quite right.

It LOOKS to have doors like a smart but the first thing I noticed was that it doesn't have 3 bolt wheels, they are 5 bolt. And also, there is a wheel on the back (like a jeep). Did smart cars ever have either of these options? I know that most smarts don't come with spares they come with a repair kit or something. Anyway, I tend to think Smarts are quite safe so would like to respond to the email. I already looked on snopes but there is nothing there.

I have not actually seen this email, but of course it is false.

Here is the pic I believe making the rounds, and yes the spare tire and 5 lug is a complete give away.



The car is actually a VW CrossFox as you can tell by the features, such as spartire and lights.



And just to show bad crashes can happen to any size car

the full email has a pic that has a munched 'crossf...' on the side.. pretty obvious it's not a smart.

lol is it sad to say the first thing i noticed the ford truck in the background. i remembered receiving an email about the smart car and it's crash test. i found it on youtube. -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ju6t-yyoU8s

pretty much any car that hits above the hood will end up like that. there was one on deerfoot where a car slammed into the back of a semi. that's just how it is, all the crash safety stuff is in the front.

Yea, I saw that too but didn't think of the crossfox. The only thing that even made me doubt for a second was just the rear door really has the right shape (which is probably why people think that's what it is).

yeah i honestly couldn't get that out of my head for days. the one pic where the guy was in half and it showed his face and everything was the worst one.
the other one where it showed his bottom half with his spine sticking out was pretty bad too. the guys at work said it was funny.... but i really did not enjoy it.

yeah I just got the original email for this one. good thing i wasn't eating at the time. The guy is in two pieces. Better yet, outside of the police bit who takes pictures like that?
