Citroen has unveiled their new C4 Cactus AIRFLOW 2L concept.
Set to debut at the Paris Motor Show, the concept is based on the C4 Cactus but has been equipped with a number of improvements to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Starting up front, there's a new front bumper with three air intakes that automatically open to cool the engine and close to improve aerodynamics. The concept also has a larger rear spoiler and 19-inch active shutter wheels with ultra-low rolling resistance tires. The side mirrors have also been replaced by slender rearview cameras to minimize drag. Thanks to these modifications, the concept is 20% more aerodynamic than the production model.
Besides the aerodynamic styling tweaks, engineers used lightweight materials including aluminum, composites and high-strength steel. These changes enable the concept to weigh 100 kg (220 lbs) less than the standard model.
Power is provided by a Hybrid Air powertrain that consists of a three-cylinder PureTech petrol engine, a compressed air energy storage unit, a hydraulic pump/motor and an automatic transmission with an epicyclic gear train. The system operates in three different models including air only, petrol engine only and a combination of both. Thanks to this futuristic powertrain and all the aforementioned modifications, the concept returns 2 L/100 km (117.6 mpg US / 141.2 mpg UK).
