  • Renault Eolab Concept

Renault has unveiled the Eolab concept, ahead of its debut at the Paris Motor Show.

Designed to be one of the most fuel efficient models ever created, the Eolab has an asymmetric three-door layout and a drag coefficient of just 0.235.

Speaking of the latter, the car has an active front spoiler, active rear flaps that and active wheels which open to cool the brakes and close to reduce drag. The concept also has an active suspension which automatically adjusts the ride height to minimize drag.

To further improve fuel efficiency, Renault used a multi-material body shell constructed out of steel, aluminum and composites. The concept also has a magnesium roof, ultra-thin windscreen glass and a lightweight interior. Thanks to these changes, the car weighs 400 kg (882 lbs) less than a comparable Clio.

Power is provided by a Z.E. Hybrid powertrain that consists of a 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine, a 6.7 kWh battery and a clutchless three-gear transmission with an integrated electric motor. The engine produces 75 PS (57 kW) and 95 Nm (70 lb-ft) of torque, while the electric motor develops 68 PS (50 kW) and 200 Nm (147 lb-ft) of torque. This setup enables the concept to consume 1 L/100km (282 mpg UK / 235 mpg US) and have an electric only range of 60 km (37.2 mile).

While the Eolab won't be going into production, Renault says concept has "100 new and realistic technological developments that are designed to be introduced gradually on upcoming Renault vehicles."
