McLaren has officially unveiled the highly anticipated 2011 MP4-12C.

Set to become the first "modern" McLaren, the car features dynamic styling that was purposely designed to be timeless and relevant for years to come. While the end result looks kind of generic from certain angles, McLaren points out that virtually every aspect was designed to be fully functional. Obviously the car features a little McLaren magic, but that's mostly limited to the F1-inspired dihedral doors and air scoops that resemble the McLaren logo. Out back, the car features LED taillights and unique center-mounted dual exhaust tips.

Inside, the MP4-12C boasts a luxurious cabin with a slim center console (with an "Active Dynamics" control panel), a 7-inch touch screen, and attractive sport seats. Other design features include a low cowl for improved visibility, a button-less sports steering wheel, and door-mounted climate control knobs.

Power comes from a mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which produces around 600 bhp and 600 Nm of torque. Thanks to a dry sump and a flat plane crankshaft, the engine can be placed extremely low in the chassis for a low center of gravity and improved handling. Backed up by a seven-speed "Seamless Shift" dual clutch gearbox (with normal, sport and high performance modes), the MP4-12C promises to deliver "new standards for power and performance in its sector."

While the company failed to provide performance data, they stated that they focused on "useable measures such as in-gear acceleration times, braking performance, the efficiency of power delivery, and achieving the lowest possible fuel consumption and CO2 emissions."

As you would expect, McLaren drew heavily on their racing knowledge when developing the MP4-12C. For example, the car rides on an 80 kg (176 lbs) one-piece carbon fiber chassis - dubbed the Carbon MonoCell - which was specially designed to be lightweight, strong, and durable. The supercar also features an advanced Brake Steer system, which helps to cancel out understeer when entering corners as well as providing improved traction on the way out. Other performance features include forged aluminum brake hubs, an Airbrake system and a Pre-Cog transmission function that "primes" the gearbox for the next shift.

        2011 Mclaren MP4-12C

Today's a big day for McLaren. After ambitiously launching its own separate automotive division to follow in the footsteps of arch-rival Ferrari, the British race engineering firm has finally released its long-anticipated new supercar. Called the MP4-12C, it's been developed entirely in-house, and features the latest advances in automotive technology derived from the Formula 1 circuit.

Ooh, where to start? The MP4-12C is built around an extremely light and rigid carbon fiber tub. But rather than the heavier multi-piece tubs used by its competitors and predecessors, the MP4's is made from a single piece, weighing a spritely 176 pounds). The body panels are all carbon fiber and composites, making the new McLaren more expensive to build than its competitors and resulting in an expected £160,000 ($265k) price tag – higher than either the new Ferrari 458 Italia or the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4, but lighter in weight, too.

Behind the tub sits a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine producing around 600 horsepower and 433 lb-ft of torque, offering what McLaren claims is the highest horsepower to CO2 ratio of any internal combustion engine on the market – gasoline, diesel or even hybrid. Contrary to earlier speculation that suggested Mercedes could continue furnishing its erstwhile partner with at least the engine blocks while producing its own SLS supercar and furnishing Pagani as well, McLaren says the unit was developed entirely in house. The bespoke mill features a flat-plane crank, dry sump and can rev up to 8,500 rpm, though 80% of the torque is said to be available from as low as 2,000 rpm. That ought to be good for a 0-60 time in the low threes and a 200+ mph top end.

While you might have expected carbon ceramic brakes to keep all that power and speed in check, McLaren says its conventional discs actually weigh less. They're aided by a Brake Steer system that brakes the inside rear wheel to combat understeer. But the real trick system is in the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, where Pre-Cog lets the driver load up the next gear by half-squeezing the paddle and then engaging with gunshot speed.

With the new MP4-12C, McLaren's betting the economy will bounce back soon. It's planning on building 1000 units in 2011, a quarter of which will go each to the domestic UK market and over here to the United States. The C designation also suggests that they're planning a roadster version to join the coupe. But for now, we'll just enjoy this first batch of images in the gallery below and peruse the lengthy press release after the jump.

The technology used in this car should be nothing short of amazing. I can't wait to see how it fares compared to other cars.

I still prefer the original F1, though.

                Re: 2010 McLaren MP4-12C

                New Details:

McLaren has revealed the MP4-12C supercar to the media today and we have a lot of the official details.

The two-seat MP4-12C has a 3.8-litre twin turbo petrol engine developed in collaboration with Ricardo. Maximum power output is a blazing 441 kW (592 bhp / 600 PS) developed at 7,000 rpm. The engine can rev all the way up to a dizzy 8,500 rpm. Its peak torque rivals some of the most powerful turbo diesels out there at 599 Nm (442 lb-ft) from 3,000 rpm. Apparently 479 Nm (353 lb-ft) of that is already available from 2,000 rpm. Performance figures are not available yet but expect 0 - 100 km/h figures in the very low 3s and a top speed well over 300 km/h (186 mph).

Torque goes to the rear axle through a 7-speed double clutch gearbox prompted by F1-style aluminium rockers situated behind the steering wheel. It offers a choice of Normal, Sport and Track driving modes. There's also two configurations namely H and P. H refers to handling and changes things like steering weight, suspension stiffness and stability control. Choosing P mode alters throttle response, gearshift times and engine sounds.

Because the car is so compact (4507mm long, 1908mm wide, 1199mm high and with a wheelbase of 2670mm) and thanks to a carbon composite monocoque, plus a claimed dry weight of less than 1,300kg (2,866 lbs), certain advantages are there for the taking. The main one is of course better performance, but there is also the small matter of C02 emissions. McLaren Automotive reports a figure of under 300g/km, significantly lower than its key rivals, the Ferrari 458 Italia and the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

Inside the latest gadgets and goodies can be found, including a 7-inch touch screen and Wi-Fi connectivity.
