Starting to mod GLI

I have finally started to do some moding on my GLI that will increase Horsepower. so i started with a CAI (love the sound of the pressure releasing). Also something that made a huge difference, was a 2.5" downpipe with no cats. I like the difference already. My next step is a Chip.

suggestion: trade cars with me....hehe, I love GLI's, I would still put it on coils thought if I were you....otherwise, sounds like you're on the right track

I'd suggest a turbo inlet pipe (I'm using the samco pipe). Its relatively inexpensive and its a noticable gain. You will probably want to upgrade your diverter valve as well if you plan on getting chipped, as the stock one will wear quicky with the increased boost. I recently upgraded to a front mount intercooler to replace my GLI's stock side mount and that was a very noticable difference, so once you are chipped, it would be a very worthwhile mod.

nice ride buddy I like the GLI'S are the clear side markers stock for the GLI or did you put them on.

This is the Samco (forge) turbo inlet pipe...



As you can see its a fair bit less restrictive than the stock pipe. Its not a night and day difference in performance, but it smooths out the way the boost comes on and gives a little more mid range and top end power. It also relatively inexpensive at around $250 and can be installed with basic handtools in a couple of hours.

I think $250 for an 8-10whp gain is pretty decent, regardless of what the part is. If you'd rather spend your money on a cold air intake that will give you 2hp and make a bunch of noise so you sound fast, go right ahead. Besides, I missed the part where I said you had to buy it. $250 is about the going rate for these, if you can get one for cheaper then go ahead.

I'm not sure where I've seen proof of an 8-10whp gain, but I guess thats what what any manufacturer would like to have you believe. All I'm saying is that its not a "cheap" mod, not for a part that lacks complexity or R&D....someone is a rich man thanks to you!

FWIW, I've been very cost effective with my mods, and have done quite well. even without your super rubber hose.

Why are you so against this mod? You are making a lot of claims about a part you do not own, nor have you tried. Go look up some dynos on vw vortex if you like, its a proven power adder. Yea its not a cool looking peice like an intake manifold, CAI, or an intercooler, but its been tested time and time again and it gets results. And since when is $250 a lot of money when it comes to modding a VW? I'm sure you wouldn't think twice about spending $250 on a set of headlights or some new gauges, and those don't do anything to change the performance of the vehicle. For $250 you get a mod you can install yourself, gives a small, but noticable increase in power, smooths out the power band, and makes the turbo sound a little better. If you can think of a mod that will give better gains for less money (other than a chip and downpipe/exhaust), please let us all know.

I was one of the first ones here to buy one and I did a dyno after and it was around 10 higher than my previous (only other mod difference was a grounding kit). I like mine just fine.

And to think, all of this started out from me simply suggesting that $250 is not a cheap mod. cause its not. And I've never spent that on anything you've suggested. take some ativan or something...
