The 'I' stands for fuel injection, a holdover from when it was actually a special feature.

I wouldn't buy the X either, more drivetrain loss, and less fun. The esp/traction control on a normal beamer is good enough. The salesman that sold my friend his 325 was swapping his 330X for a same year nonX, even though he'd lose a few bucks on the trade.
