  • Scott's B9 S4

Since I'm starting to order a few parts for my S4, I figure it's time to start a thread for this one. As most of you probably know by now, I have been looking to upgrade for about a year now since I have been having issues with my left knee, so driving a manual transmission everyday isn't very fun anymore. Over the past year, I have looked at an RS3, Macan GTS, and SQ5, but for one reason or another, I decided against each of these. This S4 is currently leased by my company, and the driver is planning on upgrading to an S7 once this lease is up. So why this S4 over any of the other cars? This S4 has all of the features I want (except black optics, which wasn't available at the time), I know the current owner and know that it has been well taken care of, it's a low mileage car, and I'm getting a great deal.

My plans for this car are fairly simple - lowered with some nice wheels, JB4, and exhaust. So far, things haven't gone exactly to plan. I originally ordered a set of HRE wheels, but they decided to discontinue the fitment that I needed, so it was back to the drawing board. After doing a bit more searching, I finally found a set for Vorsteiners that I really like. I also ordered a set of Racingline springs on Black Friday, but after doing a bit more research, I'm not sure those will sit low enough for my liking. I will keep them and install those come spring, but I may end up ordering a set of ABT Sportsline height-adjustable springs instead later.

              Re: Scott's B9 S4

Time for another update here. I sold my Golf R on Tuesday, so I'm currently without a car. I'm not sure when my uncle's new S7 is supposed to arrive due to the factory shutdowns, so I'm not sure when I'll be getting the S4.

Anyhow, my wheels arrived in February, complete with all of that concave goodness.

I also scored a lightly used Black Optics grille from one of the B9 groups, as well as a set of black mirror caps and lower grilles. The window trim and the one trim piece on the rear bumper will get wrapped gloss back to match. Doggo approves.

I also decided to go a different direction for suspension, so I'm selling the Racingline springs in favour of the ABT Sportsline height-adjustable springs. This one isn't my photo, but it shows the kit nicely.

So now I'm playing the waiting game since I have a fairly decent pile of parts waiting to be installed. Oh, and I also ordered an APR intercooler today to replace the tiny stock one.

                Re: Scott's B9 S4

Finally picked up the car last Friday! I haven't had a chance to install any parts yet apart from the second trunk light and the OEM European engine bay trim. Everything else will probably have to wait until spring since I'm moving and everything is packed away.

                          Re: Scott's B9 S4

Time for a little update since I've done a few things lately.

Installed my front and rear dash cams and hardwired both so that all of the wiring would be hidden. It's tucked in behind my rear view mirror nicely, so I barely even see it from the driver's seat.

I also found out that I was eligible to download the the first five map updates made available after my car was first delivered for free through my Audi Connect account, so I was able to move up to the late-2019 update.

One small thing about this car that bothered me was the cap on the strut towers. The early production B9s had a small cap held in place by a few clips which left a gap around most of the cap, so salt would get in and make a mess.

With the help of one of the guys in a B9 group, I got a pair of the revised caps that actually form a seal on the strut tower, so that should help keep the engine bay a bit cleaner. He also sourced a set of the European engine bay trim pieces that go along the sides to help clean up the look of the engine bay.

Finally, I couldn't help but take advantage of one Black Friday sale, so I treated the car to a European Performance Labs (EPL) tune. EPL are the leaders by a wide margin when it comes to development for the B9 S models and the EA839. They were the first to give everyone the ability to flash at home, and as of today, they are the first to offer on-the-fly map switching for the various files that were included (91/93/104/E40/E85/valet/stock). After driving the car for a few days, I'm VERY impressed with this tune and the incredible customer support that EPL offers. While their tune was one of the more expensive ones, it was worth every penny. It definitely launches much harder than the new RS5s, and I think it would easily be able to keep up to our TTRS now, if not slightly faster.

                          That's all for now!

                              Re: Scott's B9 S4

Time for another quick update now that I'm finally in my new house and have time to work on this thing a bit.

I added the EPL TCU tune as soon as it was released - definitely some nice improvements in terms of drivability compared to stock. I also finally got the ABT Sportsline height-adjustable springs installed and swapped over to the Vorsteiners a couple of weeks ago. I'm super happy with how it looks and I'm glad everything is finally coming together after having most of these parts sitting for over a year now! The car is going in for service, alignment, and a resonator delete on Friday. After that, I just need to get my APR intercooler installed, swap over all of the Black Optics trim pieces, and install the colour matched side markers that Jason painted for me.
