Yup. The 100 or so bucks for an inspection is always worth it before buying a car.

Listen to these guys, they know what they're talking about.

      Yes and no...
Depends which shop to be honest. Some go out of their way to find any reason for you not to buy any car, then expect you to be impressed.
When buying a 15+ year old car there are ALWAYS going to be issues which are generally minor and nothing to be scared of - one doesn't need to spend a day & $100 to know that.

The ole GM-5 is accustomed to having a 6.2L Diesel engine pushing it...the 1.8L just won't have the lungs

It is still a very large turbo comparable in size, still from a 5.7 or a 6.5 diesel by the sounds of it....and you have a 1.8l gas engine.
It is entirely the incorrect turbo for your vehicle, and one of the worst you could choose on a stock 1.8l engine lol.

I hate to always be a negative nancy (sometime i enjoy it i guess) but i think you would have so much more fun with a smaller turbo, even stock size you would at least get to feel the torque pulls and you wouldn't be waiting until 5000+rpm to spool up your turbo. That rpm is not street or daily driving friendly, you lose half your power down low until you hit that 5000rpms.

Maybe before moving onto something else you should do a bit more research into selecting a vehicle which has been adequately maintained, maybe a little less modified, and then get it inspected. Either way i'm done in this thread, enjoy your car and learn as much as you can to use in the future

A shop that knows the car, always. Getting it inspected gives you leverage and knowledge as to what you are getting yourself into.

I don't see what you're saying here. Always take it to a shop that knows the car?

Agree, if you're unable to diagnose issues on your own.

Honestly, I would completely ditch the GM-5 (use it for a fun project ) and find yourself a K04 and a non-cracked mani. Run a tried and tested tune from a company such such as APR or Unitronic etc. Yes a massive GM-5 can be tons of fun when (if?) you finally spin it up, but it wont be reliable without a tune or rods either. As Sean mentioned, a K04 will give you lots of usable torque at 3k+ which is much more street friendly, economical, and most importantly, reliable.

I think he means a shop that has extensive experience with that specific make/model/engine. Such as CAW being the master of the MK4 1.8T.

If you want to cheap out go out and get a t3 60 with a .48 hotside. Spools quick for a journal bearing turbo and has good top end grunt.

I'm going to switch the turbo soon and I already have an APR Stage II tune on it but I might switch it up as well

Not sure what you have in mind but I'd consider UM as they write fully custom files In addition to the standardized tunes.
