Need some advice from all you MK4'ers. So about a month ago I did my water pump. The method I used was lowering the engine, therefore I removed the 2 dog-mount bolts holding the engine/Transmission. At the time I didn't know The bolts were stretch bolts and could only be used once so i but them back in. One of them went in fine but the other started spinning freely at the end. Well recently there has been a tick or knock coming from the front of the car when ever I start moving, and also when I back up it does it and again when I start going forward, and Steering feels funny. I'm wondering if those 2 bolts are the problem?

Here's a video I took. I had the handbrake engaged and slowly released the clutch to look for movement. In the middle where the round bushing goes I saw movement (Where black and grey part of pendulum mount latch together) and wondering if that's the problem.

As long as they torque properly you should be fine, dog bone bolts don't torque that high anyways. If they were engine mount bolts which torque to a much higher 100nm I would change them every time. It could be your control arm bushings if your steering feels funny. There's nothing wrong with the dog bone in the video I think because the smaller round bushing on the stock bones have gaps in them and is meant to shift a little like that under load

UPDATE


So I knew the ticking from when I was pulling away was either from my CV or engine mount. Decided to replace the CV first since it had a big cut in it and was spilling grease over my wheel. Replaced it and the sound was still there. I went to the dealer and got some new stretch bolts from the pendulum mount, the reason I thought it was them is because I heard your not supposed to reuse them. I went to take the old ones out and all that came out was a bolt with threads. I bought a Heli-coil and went to work again. Turns out the bolts on the pendulum mount weren't tight enough and that's where the ticking came from, from the engine moving around. Havent heard the noise since but now it turns out I have a rip in the other CV.. Back to fixing the car I go :(

Yikes.. good luck man, my last aftermarket axle lasted me 10 000 kms before it snapped at the spline :/

Damn thats not good. Looks like i made a terrible decison. Did you get an oem one or what kind did you get?

Get an OEM one 100% of the time, or a raxle. The EMPI or other aftermarket brands CV's fail, especially if you are lowered. If you at a stock height they may last a season or two before the vibrations start coming on. Does it currently vibrate at certain speeds when in gear?

Raxles is the way to go for sure. Guy is super cool to talk to, out of Florida and loves the Calgary Stampede

Blue loctite isn't a bad idea either. Kuji lost an axle that was put through the transmission housing if i remember correctly. After a warning to tighten those bolts up too.

There are no Raxels available for the mk3, so i rebuilt an OEM axle. Took it all apart, cleaned it out and re-grease/re-sealed everything

There's empi axles in 3-400hp fwd cars here in red deer with no problems.

That's reassuring! I've got the EMPIs on my MK2 and it's gonna be pretty low soon. We'll see how they last.

Checked out your car yesterday and it's looking pretty fresh Adrian!
