That is 100% the reason for the deposits. Our mk4 engines won't get that build up on the valves like a DI engine will

Ordered a few goods and got the pistons out. Painting the block later this week and starting disassembly on transmission

              Re: My 2008 GTI

              Back from the dead...
Build is still slowly coming along. Been mostly collecting parts. A lot of bumps along the way

To start off the more I remove parts the less room I have in the garage to move around so it's always a cluster. Body panels, bumpers, and rad support has taken over my brothers room, new parts has taken over mine.
Re-shaving the bay and building the engine and trans at the same time was foolish on my part because its always a hassle to cover all engine components up when sanding down bondo and then uncovering them to do work.

I ended up completely enclosing the car with plastic curtains hanging from the roof and creating little room to do mechanical work.

After that, I sent the engine to get honed at CAW and found out the crank and flywheel is not reusable. Flywheel bolts came slightly loose and caused it to transfer flywheel material to the crankshaft flange. Due to time and lack of space I sent the car to Concept 1 to get the clutch installed last year. When I talked to Ken about what happened he was very professional and gave me two options to compensate for a possible mistake. I ended up getting a new clutch kit for below cost so HUGE shoutout to Ken and Concept 1. At this time we're still looking for a usable crankshaft.

Next, when the engine was going to get honed the machinist found the bore was worn to big. It needed to be maximum 0.0040" and it measured at 0.0046" with out honing. So the nice forged (expensive) pistons i ordered are not usable.

Plan is to move ahead with a 83.5mm (1mm overbore) bore and matching new pistons, new crankshaft. The CNC ported race valvetrain cylinder head will have to wait a couple months to be sent out because the bank account is very dry now.

              Not giving up just yet

Damn that sucks, is it possible to machine down the seat and get some aluminum shims spacer made for it? It's a nice parts collection you got there though!

There would have to be thick shims to account for the material removed on both the crank and fly wheel. I forgot to mention the clutch I had was a 6 puck ceramic that chewed the flywheel face so that would have had to get machined as well and by the time both sides of the flywheel where machined it would have been weakened. Also if you look at the flywheel there is a small rise to where the crank would sit on, and if I were to gotten it machined that rise would have been removed. It was literally welded on to the crank that's why I had such tough time removing it

Haven't been paying to much attention to the GTI, but finally my turbo manifold showed up. Ordered it in November 2014...
Engine and Trans are all back together, just have a few things that still I need to send out to polish.

Also, picked up a B8 S4, mainly the reason why the GTI hasn't gotten much love

                          Re: My 2008 GTI

Totally forgot about this thread. Went a long time without wrenching on the car, focused more on Khloe (S4) for a while. Now that its winter tho things are starting to come together. Here's a few things that have been happening:

Removed the heat resistant material that was covering the fire wall and applied reflective heat wrap instead. Since going with tubular turbo manifold I figured that I would direct most of the heat to the manifold to increase the temperature of the manifold consequently increasing its efficiency since they don't retain heat as well as cast manifolds do.

Before the engine got put back together, while out to get honed, noticed that the bore of all cylinders was off spec so decided to bore the engine to 83mm order corresponding pistons as well. Thought they looked pretty neat

Threw in a Wavetrac LSD assembled it to engage after 25% of slippage. Did the classic heat the LSD in the oven and freeze the bearings in the refrigerator to avoid having to get them pressed on. Replaced the weak brass shift forks for steel ones as as well

Since not having an intercooler behind the front clip anymore, the Mishimoto radiator had no where to mount to. Removed the end tanks of the OEM intercooler and was able to use them as mounting points for the rad.

Primed the engine bay, assembled the RS's and test fitted. That how it sat for a few months.

Recently got back to work, painted the bay, picked up some seats and ordered everything else needed to have it running.

Haven't ever been a fan of wide body flares but when trying to fit a 17x11 up front and 17x12 at the rear without stupid amounts of camber, I ordered the new ECS flares as well as the lip in the picture. Still kind of uncertain about them

Stil have to decide how much power I want to make which dictates turbo size, if i want to do direct and port injection together, and how to get the LPFP to cooperate with an AUX fuel pump.

Let me know your thoughts! good, bad, all welcome

Stay tuned I'll try and keep this updated as much as I can to avoid long reads like these
