    Re: My new 996 Turbo

I don't feel that lowering will improve the ride or handling, only looks.
I really don't want to invest that kind of money into the car when it doesn't
need it. The car handles amazing as is and can get over speed bumps and the
high curb in front of my house. I know the car looks better lowered but I rather
spend that money on maintenance and engine parts so I can be confidant in driving
    it when on long trips.

                Re: My new 996 Turbo

Well it has been a while since I have posted, or even been in town for that matter. I'm finally back from Fort Mac and it is time to get the P-car ready for summer. I just got all my parts yesterday from Porsche and I'm about to brave working on the car myself...

While I am doing this, I am planning on having the wheels powder coated, they are the same wheels shown in the first post of this thread. 3-piece forged Fikse. I personally don't like these wheels much, but they are so light I can't justify getting rid of them right now. The issue is the finish is awful and I am trying to pick I colour to have them coated in.

Being a Porsche I like the idea of going bold, I would not have graphics or coloured mirror caps, just the wheels in orange. I am going to coat the lips as well. Just wondering what some people think.

                These are the wheels

And the simple solution would be to go with an all gloss black wheel with cf mirror caps (Like this but no polished lip)

I went orange on my LM's like 2 years ago. The car had a clean look with silver, this change took $hit in a different direction. Everybody has loved it, the amount of people that comment on the car in traffic is just crazy. Have considered changing it up on an annual basis but life is too busy.

                  Go Orange!

Black will do the job, but I think a matte or gloss darkish grey will do a better job, such as gunmetal grey. In my opinion I prefer the polished lips. Not sure about the carbon mirror caps...

Phil, do some research before you pull the trigger. I'm not sure on the details but I thought I read somewhere that powder coating forged wheels weakens them or something along those lines. Again not exactly sure, but worth taking a look into it. Personally, I love that style of wheel and think it looks great!

                          Re: My new 996 Turbo

I believe it has to do with the temperature at which they're baked. Forged wheels are made at lower temperatures than cast wheels and some, not all, powder coating is baked on at a higher temperature than the initial temp used to make forged wheels. If the baking temp is lower than the forging temp you should be good from what I've read. If the baking temp is higher than the initial forging temp that can weaken the forged wheels.

                              Re: My new 996 Turbo

I might plastidip them first and see how they look.

This should explain everything about temp and forged wheels:

Forged alloy wheels are desirable because they are known to be both strong and lightweight. To achieve these characteristics, they are typically manufactured from 6061-T6 grade aluminum. At some time during the manufacturing process this alloy must undergo a two-step thermal process in order for it to attain the desired mechanical properties, which include high strength and resistance to fatigue. These thermal processing or heat treating steps are known as solution treatment (985°F) and artificial aging (350°F). With forged 6061 aluminum, the artificial aging step requires the material to be held at 350°F for about 8 hours.

The majority of powder coating materials require a cure temperature ranging from 300 to 400°F with a cure time of about 1 hour. Since this overlaps the temperature of the artificial aging step, the powder coating process has the potential to "overage" the aluminum causing embrittlement and reduced fatigue life.

Recent advances in powder coating compounds have brought about lower cure temperatures of 250°F. These new powder coating compounds are more desirable, since they do not impact the prior thermal processing steps for heat treatable alloys such as 6061-T6 aluminum.

After reading Phil's theory of forged wheels against the theory of powder coating wheels, (and please correct me if i'm wrong as i'm new at this whole engineering mumbo jumbo) but what I understand and take from it is, ........."Hi my name is Phil, and I love man cock because I won't lower my overpriced VW!"
