Not just snowstorms. Summer performance tire compounds start loosing grip below 10C and have lost 50% at 0C on dry pavement. The compounds become very hard below 10C and you increase the chance of bending or cracking your rims with low profile tires (this happens all the time) or damaging the tires themselves. There is very little safety and performance loss running winter tires into the warmer temperatures but huge performance and safety compromises running summer tires in the cooler temps. Regardless of how many cars you have it is best to be sitting in the one that has winters on when the temps are below 5-7c.
