  • Starbucks + Timmy Ho's + Denny's + 2AM = Insomnia Oreos (Pic Heavy)

This is what happens when you have nothing to do in the middle of the night. Myself, Tracy (VWSweetheart) and Trevor (Das Kold) went out for a little photo shoot. Testing out the camera with some different night settings. All constructive criticism is welcome, as we're trying to learn how to use this new camera to its best capabilities. Enjoy

IS= Image Stabilizer. Normally, its a setting that can be turned on/off if your lens has it.

If you're using a regular point and shoot, most of them have the option to long expose. By that the shutter stays open for .5s to 15s. Try doing some long exposures with different lighting. Then you can adjust contrasts etc in photoshop. Also, look if the camera has a 2 sec timer, if you're not using a tripod, but instead the roof of a car, it gives you time to get your hand off the camera and for it to level itself before the shot is taken. The shots look cool tho!

tri-pod, low shutter, aperture around 2-7, iso needs to be higher, never use car headlights as a form of camera lighting.

Best results until you get the hang of it would be to set your camera to shutter priority and set it to 1" - 60 (depending on lighting) and set iso to 1000-1600.......and never take night shots without a tri-pod

Thats awesome. Thanks for the input guys. It was our first time doing night shots, and out of 200 pics, those were our best ones. Will definitely need to invest in a tripod. Popp, why is it bad to use car headlights as a source of lighting? what would you recommend instead?

FYI as well...a photographer once told me that any shot taken of a car should be taken at the vehicles sideview mirror level (height). Any higher or lower gets harder to make the car look as good as it is.

Because there is a cut off line so you only get light from the cut off line down, which makes the lower half of the car brighter and more saturated then the top.......

the best thing to do is bring remote flashes or park it under a source of light. If you dont's have either then use longer shutter speeds to allow more natural light in. thats were the tripods come into play.

                            Remote flashes!

3 or 4. One at each wheel, and 2 with umbrellas to difuse lighting for the top half!

Good pics none the less, I enjoyed looking at them.

Evolize photo (dave) took pics of my car, maybe I can share them here without trying to "take your spotlight". (I am no expert on photog, just relaying what I have learnt from watching pros)

You can get replica (yes, replica) sets on ebay, have a nosey.

Here are some behind the scenes if you will, give you some ideas on lighting?

                            Equals this:

haha no worries. I'm not worried of anyone stealing the spotlight. I enjoy lookin at pics too, and the ones above give me a good idea of what I need to get to set up some nice shots. Thanks for sharing them! As for not using cars as a source of light, it makes sense. Never really thought of it that way. I appreciate all the input, keep it coming!!!!!
