  • Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster

Helping to add a mess of luster to the formerly dusty L.A. auto show is the world debut of the 2007 Lamborghini LP640 Murciélago Roadster. This new version of the ragtop - together with the LP640 coupe that starred at this past March’s Geneva show - is your basic mid-life redo of the big bully car from Sant’Agata. (The second-generation Murc happens in 2009.)

Well, how much is there to say here really? It’s the LP640 without the roof panel. Well, all right, just as on the first roadster the LP640 Roadster gets a better rear end look than the lozenge-y coupe, the two angled “pinne” dominating the view as ever. Compared to the original that only made 199mph and accelerated to 62mph in a snail-like 3.8 seconds, the LP640 open version goes to 205mph to get you home faster and dashes to 62mph in just 3.4 seconds to help get you arrested. There’s the 30/70 torque-split Quattro traction from Audi, attractive engine cage in aluminum or carbon fiber available, and the ceramic brake platters introduced on the coupe. Dry weight - Lamborghini continues to favor this utterly useless figure over true curb weight due to the marketing benefits - remains the same as on the first roadster at 3,671 pounds.

The name “LP640” stands for “longitudinale posteriore 640 horsepower” (i.e. “longitudinal rear 640 horsepower [engine]”), however in North America the SAE horsepower rating is 631hp and we anticipate thousands of North American buyers wandering the streets hopelessly trying to figure that one out. “LP631” just doesn’t roll off the tongue as well as the 640-hp DIN rating, folks. V-12 engine dimension is the expanded 6.5-liter on any continent, however.

As the Murciélago lineup is a stable provider but has not caught big fire on the sales front - particularly in coupe form - and the Gallardo shadow grows ever larger over it, volumes will be kept down to around 250 roadsters per annum with an unspecified smaller number of coupes being built. The roadster LP640 starts deliveries in the all-important USA in late winter 2007 and pricing starts at an estimated $330,000.
