  • Volkswagen Castrol Cup - Round 3

Well, today I got back from my trip to Kielce. Its a nice little town in the mountainous region of Poland, host of the 3rd round of the VW Castrol Cup. It was fantastic! My grandpa happens to live there, so what a perfect opportunity to go. There is a race track there, built in 1975, its 4,160m long. Its composed of an oval, and 2 windy stretches of road, which go away and come back towards the oval, and an elevation change of 60m. The first stretch of road, is part of the national highway (autostrada), which they close down for big races, and detour traffic, the return stretch (back to oval) is permanent. When there is no racing going on, you can drive up the highway, and make a right hairpin turn onto the race track, and rip down it for 2km, as fast and as recklessly as you so desire, slow down, make a sharp right again, merge onto the highway again, drive up 2km to the top, and do it as many times as you wish all over again, cool huh?

I was lucky to be a VIP during the race, well got a VIP pass anyway, as my grandpa's neighbor happened to be one of the 3 designers and builders of the race track, so he hooked me up. I was basically allowed to go anywhere i chose, including the pits during the race. It was GREAT! I must say, I didnt like the golf5 that much until now. Guess it grew on me, huh?

Friday was training and practice runs, Saturday was race day. There were other cars there too, Fiat Seicento Cup going on as well. At the end, there was a Le Mans style 3 hour race, with a great mix of Cars... Saleen S7, Porsche GT, Audi TT DTM (which caught fire during pit stop somehow...), Renaults, Hondas, Opels, etc... and the Golf TDI of course. But the long race got canceled an hour into it, as the Audi ruined it for everyone... lol. The entire pit lane quickly filled with foam and water as the Fire Truck was just around the corner... all in all, good fun watching.
