As a rabid RX8 lover, just have to defend my baby and say that both the 8 and the Z turned in identical track times on top gear, and that many of the reports of low power were due to the fact that the car retards it's timing immediately when on a dyno because it detects slipping. It's very complicated but the end result is you can't accurately dyno an rx8. Unless of course you drove one and still think it's gutless in which case I'll shut up.

I like the G35 better than the Z but all three are hot cars in my books.

Yea the G35 coupe was nice (but i've been in one a few times now), My wife really liked the FX45 which I would almost consider if I had a nice quick car to go with it. I actually wasn't as dissapointed with the Jetta as I thought I would be, I like the front but the fact that both the Golf and Jetta will have the same nose is a bit dissapointing. I think there was way too much chrome on the front for a VW also.

I have to say too, that SRT4 had a cheap looking interior but MAN those seats were nice (I sat in a redline too which also had nice seats) and that price is awesome. The Cobalt looks cool but I'd never buy one, I don't care what chassis it's based on, you'd loose your shirt buying one, I've heard "decent" things about them but the interior still sucks. I still don't know how I feel about the RX8, I was really exicted about them when they first came out but the 3rd Gen will always be a nicer car even if it's not quite as realiable. I like the concept of a rotary too but don't think i'd ever own one, they are still problematic.

My wife always makes me look at the Volvo's when we go but I have to say, the S60R/V70R are cool, and the V50 T5 is close to the Passats and, though a bit smaller have 218 horses and all wheel drive, and a REALLY cool interior. I'm liking Volvos more and more.

No, I've never driven it... my main problem is that is has no torque. I loves my torque.

Now that I can admit. The other problem is it gets about the same fuel economy as an Explorer. Ah well, I think everyone has their impractical lust car.

Btw - I wouldn't buy a cobalt either, but I'm asked quite a bit for car buying advice at work and they tend to have budgets under 20K. Elantra GT has even creeped up over 22K now. And Cav/Sunfires are the devil.

Ok, one question, I didn't have much time to sit in the A3 but I believe it had the DSG tranny (I have never seen one so I can't be sure). Anyway, what does that tranny cost as an option on their existing cars? It may only be available on the TT so that may demand a premium but I was just curious if it's feasible for someone that is in a constant power struggle over our next new car to be auto or manual.

Re: Audi A3 at the Calgary Auto Show Thread

Well the problem is the only car it has been offered on is a TT (maybe Beetle TDI too) but it never seems to be an option so it is hard to see how much extra it actually costs. The A3 had no price info yet so we are not sure what impact it will have on the prices yet.

Yea, I tried to find out by building a TT but it's like 5 grand different but it's got a bunch of other stuff (including more power, etc.) Oh well, I was just curious, it would be a shame if it was only available on the top model.

The Elantra GT is over $22K now? Holy bejezus. I noticed they didn't have one at the show, which is a shame because its one of the best hyundai's.

The A3 appeared to have the DSG - it had the paddles for sure because I played with them (soooo smooth clickies!!)

If I was in a debate about auto-manual I wouldn't hesitate to get one. In Europe it's a 1200 pound option so I'd guestimate it's probably 500 bucks over a normal auto here?

Edit: Getting sloppy - Elantra GT is just over 20 with no extra options like bolts/mats etc, and before tax/freight etc. I was just in there with a friend and I think the 22 number stuck in my head because the cars are in such demand they don't move much compared to how much they were willing when I was buying the Jetta. And since his budget had to be under 20 we couldn't make it work. They are great cars for the money without a doubt.

You can spend 20 an Echo Hatckback (I so happen to have a brochure on my desk) but the SCs are not cheap so you get into a new price realm but cool and fun. I will never forget that Orange one in Edmonton last summer at SCN.

Yea, sorry, I meant you could get the Echo for under 20 (the 2 door one anyway) and the s/c would come later. Don't ask me why I love small cars so much, it drives my Wife crazy, she rolls her eyes every time I point out a done up Echo or a Smart or what have you.

If I were buying a car I would probably get the echo hatch. I love em.
