You are absolutely right. I am one of these people. My '03 Jetta is the first and possibly last VW I will own (given my initial opinion of the MkV). I think that the Golf has a lot more potential, but alas, the Golf is not for me. I have to admit that, while I really like my car, I haven't been around VWs long enough to consider myself loyal to the brand.

I really think that VW dropped the ball in a big way with this vehicle.

I'd have to agree, Im pretty disappointed with this lastest generation, producing a rather uninspired, bland design might spell bad things for VW.

I think that the MK4 generation really did alot to boost sales for VW, it definetly had a much broader mass appeal than previous generations did and it seemed to bring in alot of people who had'nt owned VW's in the past.

This lastest entry will do nothing to help with any sort of brand loyalty, there are just too many other appealing cars available right now with better styling, power etc.

well considering that the jetta IV was there best seller i thought for sure they would have put the golf out first

Well I got to see the new Jetta in person last night and I was not too impressed but not that disappointed either. I think that is the problem with this car it is a change but not a move forward so much in a move sideways. The interior has some nice bits but some plain bits but did not give that feeling like the first time you sat in a MK4. The exterior is strange to me, the front is nice and appealing but then as you work your way back it just becomes bland and non descript. I think this new version of the Jetta may help mass appeal but I am not sure how current owners will react and if they leave the car for 6 years again then VW may really be out of touch as this car would have made the best impact if it came out 2 years ago.

On a more personal note I feel I am starting to look at cars in a different way not because I am getting older and maybe need it for different things. I am starting to see them as a blank canvas, and the potential for what they can be. I am sure I could like a modded Jetta and there will be some nice ones around but probably never in my garage.

Also note that the only engine available for the new Jetta will be the 2.5 litre, 5 cylinder engine for the next year or so.

The first generation of buyers are really guinea pigs with this.

I heard other engines will be available in the summer/fall time period but yes the 2.5L is the only choice on release with auto only I think too.

I wasn't impressed at all with it......not one iota.....Anyhow, I think my next car may be a Volvo, the best car in the whole show was the S60 R package hands down, in terms of comfort, ergonomics, options, and style.....So yeah, back on topic, VW's whole display was a disapointment, no GTI?? No GLI?? No pizzaz, no frills, elderly friendly, aneamic poor display of VW......Same with Lexus, no colours, nothing bringing you into the display! Sad sad state........

I just am surprised that people here are surprised. The Jetta IV was creeping into 35-40K with full options, and pricing was one of the killers. The V will be much cheaper (which explains the lack of real metal trim, shittier seats and what appears to be almost the same cluster as the IV. If you want the plush stuff, the A4 or the Acura TSX will fit the bill. I like the S40 but overpriced compared to the Acura.

That said, I think a MK5 GTI will be priced much better than we are expecting, and the Jetta will be back in Mazda 3 ranges. You can always get aftermarket seats and trim.

I don't think it will be cheaper. VW sold a LOT of Jettas at the current price so why change?

the mk5s will cost the same as the current lineup does.. thats the reason people buy VWs over hondas,etc is because you pay more to get a better quality car.

my jetta was FULLY loaded for 03.5 and it only costed 29500+GST so if a person is paying 35gs for one they are a sucker and dont' know how to barter.

You didn't go for GLX - with the sport package it was 33K before freight/pdi etc. Loaded 04 GLS is over 33K.

There will be some price overlap with the 3 for sure - a GT is around 22-23, which was already well over a base GL (which looked like a thief had stripped it IMO).

I'm guessing they won't top 29 even with all the options, but they have officially announced it will be cheaper than the MK4. Whether that means 1K or 5K who knows. Can't judge based on american pricing - my MK4 was under 19K if you converted it at the time.

Well, here's a few things that kinda got me when I was walking around sitting in other cars....I'm sure VW wants to keep cost down, but take a look around at other cars, and the small things....example, I sat in the tiburon, yes its a hyundai, and its ugly, but sitting in it was a whole different thing, leather seats, leather door panels, plush leather wheel, in a car that retails new for $23K....example 2, Acura RSX, again, nice interior, nice seats, nice wheel, sporty car, retails $26K......Example 3, Dodge SRT4, very comfy supportive seats, boost guage, fast as hell, metal pedals, retails $26K......My car, reasonable seats (nothing compared to any of the above), plastic crappy steering wheel (a la Chevy Aveio style), a golf with a turbo engine, retailed $32K....

I love my car, but it should have come with some different standard equipment being a GTI, with a more reasonable price tag.....For a sporty car its not overly sporty.....VW seems to cheap out on some things, or are just not overly receptive to market trends.....Hell, even the fortwo had a neater interior......notice I'm bithcing alot about interior?? Thats where I spend all my time....And Bart shows that you can turn any golf to look better than a GTI, and never see or know the difference between them.......I'll wait for the new R32, and see what happens...if not, R line volvo is where its at!

The Jetta at the show was 30,000 and change I believe. the other one was a bit less I think, but they still just had the base motor. It's going to be more money for sure.

Just makes me happier I decided to keep my Mk 4 for a while.

they did the same thing with mk4, the jetta was intoduced before the golf. i have to agee with you on the styleing, its horrible. when i saw it getting pdi'd
the rims look way under sizd for the car, and it looked like a maxima rear ended and civic. not good on eurapeen styling. Vw still hvent gotten into the HP compition, for the price, they are getting walked all over.
