I think that at 200hp stock, the civic will probably eclipse the Golf as the compact sport car of choice. Previously VW offered a more powerfull stock engine and some interior refinements, but Honda has caught up on both counts. I am also guessing it will be cheap.
yea alot of cars are taking notes i think... i heard those new chevy cobalts have interiors that are actually decent with soft touch plastics or whatever like we get
I don't think VW has been behind, the Mk4 was ahead in many respects, in particular the 1.8T and VR6 are excellent engines, and the interiors hold up even 5 years after they were designed. VW also offered the best fuel economy with the TDI and even 2.0L and 1.8T compared to other companies. VW also includes ASP/ESP traction control and some of the best safety equipment you can find on the Mk4.
The Mk5 is a very good car and will doubtless lead the way in some respects, but maybe not as much as the Mk4.
Just remember that the SI's ain't cheap and that 200 HP will only come at a million or so RPM.
Even with M@d V3tec Y0! there won't be enough torque at 2000 rpm to open a pickle jar where as the 1.8t/2.0t is making full torque by then.
If they keep the weight down it could be good.
About the price, that's true, Honda's are overpriced for what you get most of the time. But resale is very good.
In terms of daily driving, low end torque may be lacking but its liveable....I mean, what are you doing? Racing to the speed limit? Playing the stoplight to stoplight grand prix? A sick amount of lowend torque and decent midrange will make up a big drop in topend. The opposite also is true...a sick topend and will make up for what it lacks down low.
At 2000rpm my car has more torque than my friend's now-sold MKIII Supra....but at 5000+ rpm.....lets just say I might as well sit at home and watch Martha Stewart. Or even compared to an ITR, at 2000rpm I have double the torque he's making but my engine peters out when his is getting going, and the A4 has yet to beat him, regardless of who's driving what.
EDIT: It depends what you like. Some people love high winding engines (like an M3 or Ferrari), others don't. And also some people prefer a bit more luxury (us) over sheer mechanical joy and speed (them) upon initial purchase. What would be nice is if VAG would give the fwd cars (Frontrak A4's, Golfs, Jettas, etc.) a LSD stock. Sure we have ASR/EDL but its a poor solution in comparison (from driving my friend's ITR which has a helical LSD stock).
yea exactly kris.. i can't wait to get my rear sway installed.. i'll go test drive a mk5 gti once they come here and if it can outhandle and out power my jetta i'll buy one right then and there and mod the shiz outta it to its potential to.

Does anyone know if the new Jetta and GTI will have independent rear suspension?? Right now they're all running those torsion beam rears (like my 97 A4) which is fine over smooth surfaces but is vastly inferior to independent setups (wishbone, trapezoidal link, etc.) when handling in not-ideal conditions.
This is something that makes me kinda sad about mine and your guys' cars. Civics, integras, etc. have all been running independent rear suspensions for over a decade. Even my 1989 integra had double wishbone front and rear.
Sure my Audi (and some of your guy's cars) have the 5-link front suspension with equal length drive shafts but...there's that beam in the back.....
Sigh....my only consolation is that the MY1997 A4 has carbon fiber drive shafts......
The Civic is pretty cool but it is only a concept so I doubt we will see anything like that, the closest will be Type R trim which we never get anyway.
