So while in Houston, I saw this ungodly spider outside my window. The thing was so freakin big I had to take a pic. It's hard to get an idea of scale, but I held up my Motorola V60 phone next to it and, from tip to tip, this thing was bigger than the phone!!! Sorry for the crappy pic, but I was holding my camera at a shaky arms-length from this thing cuz I obviously didn't want to get too close Anyone know what this thing is?

Re: What the Hell is this?
It is some sort of an orb weaver spider, although I am not too sure what species it is. There are some local species like this, although not as big. They are not dangerous to humans, and are regarded as a beneficial arthropod due to the numbers of pest insects that they eat.

That pretty nuts, sometimes living in cold ass Calgary has its advantages because the bugs cannot get to big and are killed every year. You should see the size of some of the bugs in AustraliaBlair

As for Calgary we are pretty lacking in the insects, especially compared to warmer areas. We do however get some pretty big insects like the giant water bug (about 4 inches long with a menacing beak), and one of our local moths has a wingspan of 5+ inches, and a bright green caterpillar as long as your index finger.

As for the spider pictured at the top, I looked around & I think it is a black and yellow argiope, or St. Andrew's spider. They are pretty common in north america.
