    2001 A4 rattle type noise near back of engine

    My son just bought a 2001 A4 1.8 T with about 230 km in very nice condition.
    Intermittently on start ups there is a rattle, gravely sound which appears to be coming from the back of the engine, it goes away when slight throttle is applied. when shutting it off it makes the same type of noise. engine has good oil (castor 5w40) and good level. does not change with clutch pressed or depressed. other times there is no noise
    any ideas? ( i know its a guessing game with out hearing the noise but it might give me some insight )

    Mounts possibly? Exhaust Shield on the drive axle?

      It's a B5...this is normal lol....JK. I'm not up on the 1.8 but maybe the chain tensioner? It really could be anything. If you could maybe get a short video and post it up.

        I second the exhaust shield or drive shaft mounts

          Noise sounds from the back of the engine, at idle car is stopped, nothing loose under side, exhaust is good. It may be the cam chain as stated, if so what would the suggested repair be? how much $ or can this be done at home, how much time does it take?
