  • 2018-19 Audi RS4 Avant (B9)

Audi Sport has not one, but two world premieres to showcase in Frankfurt as after checking out the rear-wheel-drive R8 V10 RWS yesterday, now time has come to have a look at the new RS4 Avant. If you’re finding the S4 Avant not aggressive enough in terms of exterior styling, the full-blown RS version should solve that first-world problem thanks to its bigger air vents, oval exhaust tips, and a new roof-mounted rear spoiler that further sets it apart from the lesser model.

According to Audi, the design of the much-awaited RS4 Avant takes after the legendary 90 quattro IMSA GTO race car while at the same time paying homage to the first generation of the model introduced in 1999 by adopting a similar Nogaro blue paint. The latter will be available only through Audi Exclusive, so it’s going to cost a pretty penny.

Armed with a biturbo 2.9-liter V6 engine borrowed from the RS5 Coupe, the fast wagon pushes out a meaty 450 horsepower (331 kilowatts) and 443 pound-feet (600 Newton-meters) of torque. While the amount of horsepower hasn’t changed compared to the previous generation, torque has risen by a massive 125 lb-ft (170 Nm) thanks to the adoption of turbocharging.

It needs just 4.1 seconds to cover the sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) and will be able to reach an electronically governed speed of 155 mph (250 kph). Those willing to pay more can ask Audi to add the optional RS dynamic package that will increase maximum velocity to 174 mph (280 kph).

As with every other Audi Sport model, with the exception of the aforementioned R8, the new RS4 Avant benefits from a Quattro all-wheel drive. Power transfer is done exclusively through an eight-speed tiptronic transmission, while a rear-mounted differential is available at an additional cost. The performance wagon sits seven millimeters (0.3 inches) closer to the road than the regular A4 Avant and has been fitted with 19-inch wheels, with a 20-inch set optionally offered.

Compared to the model it replaces, the new RS4 Avant is 80 kilograms (176 pounds) lighter, tipping the scales at 3,946 pounds (1,790 kilograms). There’s not much to say about the interior as it has been largely carried over from the RS5 Coupe, including the specific RS trinkets, a head-up display, and the fantastic digital Audi Virtual Cockpit. To spice things up, there are various styling packages on offer, along with plenty of customization options via the Audi Exclusive program.

Audi will open the order books in Europe later this fall and will have the RS4 Avant at dealerships early 2018. The first country to get the car will be Germany where pricing will kick off from €79,800.

Looks better than I was anticipating! Still could have gone a little wider with the fender flares, though! Love the Nogaro Blue. Sad that it probably won't make it to North America.

I like! Fenders have that flat flare from 90 quattro GTO...obviously not as large as those, but still looks damn good IMO. Please please please start bringing these to NA!

car looks good, but i agree the wide body is too meh. Also not digging the iPad bolted to the dash. Needs to back like the a3 how it rises out.

I agree it is still not aggressive enough, but considering how bland a B9 can be, I think this is not bad, I like it more than I thought I would. The RS6 is still the king though.

                      Re: 2018-19 Audi RS4 Avant (B9)

I had this discussion over coffee yesterday, and I am interested in how the forum feels...

3 of four people involved were on the same page, "audi will never bring them here, we get screwed out of all the good wagons". The classic "I would but this in a heartbeat, but they wont let me". (I am guilty of being in this camp, so don't anyone take the next part too seriously...)

The fact of the matter, as pointed out by person 4, is that 90% of us are all talk. the "base" model, which will likely never see the light of day, is $118K. That is a hell of a price tag for a daily driver wagon, and likely very few of us can afford to even consider it. Look at how few AMG wagons are floating around, and it shows that the demand just isn't there.

Now, the obvious rebuttal is "well I could afford a pre-owend one", but that is also illogical, because Audi doesn't make used cars. Someone needs to step up and drop (likely) $130K.

So, what do you think? Am I a pessimist? Do people on this forum actually plan to drop that kind of cash?

It's a beauty! I have always loved the white/beige interior against the blue exterior.

And yes if I was rich I might spend $130k to have one. As it stands today it's a bit of a pipe dream.

If the Rs4 would come here, i couldn't really see it start at over 100k. A C63 here starts at 75k and an m3 at 77k. (add a few grand for wagon tax i suppose). Maybe fully loaded at 110-120k but you're getting awfully close to rs7 territory at that point.

At 130K, No not i wouldn't buy one of these. its way too slow for that price.
at 80-90k. Absolutely would consider it.

                          What was a price of a RS4 back in 2008? 80 grand?

That all being said... I'm very curious of how the new panamera wagon sells.

My 2008 new in 2008 was $110K!!! I had the bill of sale to prove it! Crazy money. Like Mike said above, this would be my dream car if it came with a manual transmission. Having said that, I cant afford that new so I would be the one buying it used after 5 years for 1/2 of that!
