  • Audi Q8 Concept

We have the first big concept from the 2017 NAIAS – Audi’s Q8 concept is here and is “more luxurious than any Audi before.” The study represents the German company’s first entry in the full-size, coupe-SUV segment and will morph into a production model in 2018.

Audi says the Q8 concept combines the sporty and sexy lines of a coupe with the functionality of classic SUVs - and we totally agree. Despite the sloping, coupe-like roofline, the cabin offers enough room for the rear passengers, thanks in part to the 9.8 foot (3.0 meters) long wheelbase.

“It demonstrates the strengths of our brand in both technology and design while providing a glimpse at a future full-size, production SUV. With its next-generation display and control solutions, we are enabling customers to experience connectivity in a whole new way.”

Mr. Voggenreiter is referring to the contact analogue head-up display, which Audi says is the biggest in the automotive industry and will be first offered in the next generation A7. There’s also a new version of the brand’s virtual cockpit, which now features new functions and higher resolution. A couple of other displays, integrated in the so-called “black panel” on the center console, is used to control the infotainment system and for vehicle settings.

Speaking of the interior, it offers “opulent spaciousness for four persons,” sitting in four individual seats made of segments that appear to be separate geometric bodies, from the pronounced side bolsters to the head restraints.

While being a concept, the Q8 uses production technologies for the drive system. Power comes from a plug-in hybrid system, which combines the work of a 3.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and an electric motor. The total system output stands at 443 horsepower (330 kilowatts) and 516.3 pound-feet (700 Newton meters) of torque. Audi claims the study can accelerate from a standstill to 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in only 5.4 seconds and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph (250 kph). On paper, the SUV consumes only 2.3 liters of fuel per 100 km (102.3 miles per gallon).

The powertrain uses a lithium-ion battery located in the rear, which consists of 104 prismatic cells. It has a capacity of 17.9 kWh an can provide an electric range of 37 miles (60 kilometers), making the total range of the car up to 621 miles (1,000 kilometers). A full charge with 7.2 kW output takes about two and a half hours.

Audi says the Quattro all-wheel drive system delivers the power from the hybrid system to all four wheels with “supreme control” - at the cornering limit, it minimally brakes the inside wheels, which further enhances dynamics and stability. The concept sits on massive 305/35 series tires, wrapped around 23-inch wheels.

In Canada, in the winter, they don't!

Not sure though...maybe just an electronic pop like a trunk?

I like it, but I think it would look even better if they just put proper wide fender flares on it (ala B7 RS4) and didn't do that two piece thing that's going on...

Maybe the door trim has a small heating element that goes through it, press and hold the OOOO button and it activates for 15 seconds so that the door can open.

                  Re: Audi Q8 Concept

Audi took the wraps off the first Q8 concept in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as a way to tell the whole world it’s cooking up a new flagship SUV. For the ongoing Geneva event, the luxoborage is being presented in a sporty guise to preview what will likely be an SQ8 of some sort, unless the folks from Ingolstadt will want to go all out with an RS Q8.

Eschewing the Bombay blue paint of the original concept for a striking Krypton orange shade, the Q8’s alter ego adopts a slightly more aggressive design as one would expect from a performance model. The gargantuan grille is still there, but this time around it has a honeycomb structure also used for the huge air vents flanking it. The high-tech laser headlights have been carried over from the first concept, but in this new application feature a black tint to enable a more aggressive look.

Audi points out the wheel housings have been widened by 12 millimeters (half an inch) and at the back there are oval exhaust tips typically reserved for the RS-badged models. To further set it apart from the other concept, numerous black accents have been applied and can be noticed on the mirror caps and side sills, for example.

While the design hasn’t changed that much, the hardware that lies within the familiar skin is different. The Q8 Sport Concept represents Audi’s first stab at giving the 3.0 TFSI six-cylinder engine a mild hybrid setup and an electric powered compressor. With 476 horsepower (350 kilowatts) and 516 pound-feet (700 Newton-meters) of torque at its disposal, the go-faster SUV runs to 62 mph (100 kph) in only 4.7 seconds and will top out at 171 mph (275 kph).

Besides being really fast, the Q8 Sport Concept is also quite frugal thanks to it electrified powertrain with a 0.9-kWh lithium-ion battery mounted underneath the trunk. Making use of energy recuperation, the high-riding vehicle manages to consume about one less liter of gasoline per 100 km than an equivalent car without the mild hybrid tech. It’s a great SUV for long journeys as Audi says it will cover more than 745.6 miles (1,200 kilometers) on a single tank of gas.

Considering the regular Q8 will be out at some point in 2018, the performance version being previewed here is probably due around 2019.

It's got a bit of the Panamera Sport Turismo look from the rear.

I've not been a fan of the Audi SUV's for the most part. I'm kinda digging this one though.

So you have a car accident or a medical emergency, how does emergency services open the door? I know on newer cars if the crash sensors go the car unlocks, does this just pop all the doors? That would be great in the middle of winter when you've just had an accident. If the door is dented in there is nothing to grab on to to heave it open?

You go to pick up guests (non car people), think they will have any idea how to open the door?
