  • The all famous B8 engine oil consumption!

Hello all, I recently helped a friend down size vehicles. I helped her pick out a 2009 Audi station wagon Q with the 2.0t engine. Knowing that engine oil consumption was to be expected like it is in any turbocharged car we bought it anyway. After several top ups we decide to keep an actual track of the consumption. Today the car had to be topped up again, after 350 kilometres. It's alarming and by no means a good or "normal" thing. I am looking for people to shed light on the matter, what kind of resolution has come out of it for other Audi owners of the same body generation. I'm gonna get her to start making phone calls out to the original dealership to check and see if there are any records of it going in for the oil consumption test. We did some reading and a lot of people in the U.S. of A. got their pistons rings re done and in worst cases they got the engine replaced under warranty. I wonder if some where along the line the car never made it for any of the testing. Found little no info on Canadian cars. Although the car in itself is nothing short of great and amazing I'm starting to think the engine in this thing might a bit of a lemon!

Yeah a lot of people had problems with oil consumption on early b8 cars due to bad rings. Id say you have one of them there so I'd say you'll need some new rings at a minimum

We had our pistons and rings done,as it failed both tests miserably....I would take it to Erik, PartsErik here, at Royal Oak Audi. He's a long time member here, and all of his staff were incredible to deal with.

Right. The car was purchased in Alberta, it originally came from Quebec. There's 157,000 kilometres on the car and it's a 2009. Relatively young engine in it! Seeing Geo and Colin both are recommending Royal Oak it's definitely gonna make its way up there...once both the owner and the car hopefully make a move to Alberta. The car is in Manitoba at the moment, has anybody experience a difference in oil consumption by switching brands of oil? I read on audiworld that some guys were getting better or worst consumption with different brands of oil. Right now as I said it's going through just under a litre per 350-400 kilometres in a month!! That is just horrible, about 10x more than it should. Is there any sort of additive the engine could use to also slow the consumption down? And are we "**** outta luck" as far as warranty goes with the car being a 2009?
          Thanks guys!

Should be alright, I believe there was an extension for the oil consumption issue.

Oil brand isn't going to make a significant difference, may sure something that meets spec is used, don't just put in whatever is cheap or it will hurt it in the long run. Cheap that meets spec.

Get her to have the car idling, open the oil filler cap, there should be a small amount of pressure holding the cap down. If there is a significant amount of suction they need the breather on the top of the valve cover.

Re: The all famous B8 engine oil consumption!

The 2009 model was the first of the generation and suffered the most from oil consumption. By 2011 they had fixed virtually all of the issues.

I wouldnt add any additives or anything, they would likely cause more harm than good.

Re: The all famous B8 engine oil consumption!

Wellp, after some phoning and asking around sounds like we are dead in the water with Audi and warranty. We are past the mileage required for them to work on the car.
A couple of things we found out, Audi came up with the PCV valve fix as Colin mentioned and a software update as part of their fixing for the consumption problems. Lady friend got a quote from St James Audi in Winnipeg, just under 7 grand to get it fixed...brutal! We are gonna look and ask for prices at non Audi shops and compare. Tomorrow the car is going into a local shop that specializes in German cars for an oil change (going with 5w40 liqui moly), they are also gonna do a general diagnose of the engine to learn more about it consuming so much oil. We are gonna do the PCV and software update and see where that gets us. Thanks for all the input guys!

Here's a thread off AudiZine that has alot of good info...mine was fixed at 141k kms.....and I'm sure I heard Audi was taking care of the issue up to 170k kms.

It's the 2009's that seem to have the problem the most common anyways

Re: The all famous B8 engine oil consumption!

Mileage restrictions are only if the update (Also known as stage 1) has been done previous to the warranty extension. If the update has never been done the update is available until this October I believe, with no mileage restrictions.

Here is the kicker. You need service records! It is proof that the vehicle was maintained and that there is no consumption due to neglect. We have been able to get vehicles a stage 1 repair with limited records but, if you need pistons it is not going to happen.

Most vehicles are fine after stage 1 is performed.
