So little yet so chunky. Typical M look with quad exhaust tips and M bumpers. I like it more than the M1 but it'll appeal to a specific crowd I think it's a bit squished looking. Still gotta see one in person to really appreciate the details

BMW has introduced a series of M Performance upgrades for the M2 Coupe.

Starting with the exterior, the model gets M2 MotoGP Safety Car-inspired aerodynamics made of carbon-reinforced plastic, including new M Performance front and side sill attachments, rear diffuser and mirror caps, rear spoiler and diffuser, and radiator grille.
Step inside the cabin and you’ll find the same sporty atmosphere highlighted by the M Performance LED door sill cover strips for the driver and passenger side, floor mats, and stainless steel pedal covers.

BMW will also offer two different sports steering wheels for the M2. The M Performance Pro steering wheel has grip areas covered in Alcantara and a harder foam body than the standard steering wheel, resulting in “better grip and a more precise steering feel.” Also available will be an M Performance steering wheel with race display and carbon fiber trim. It features an integrated function display in the upper steering wheel rim, which provides information such as section and lap times, longitudinal and transverse acceleration, and others.

Last but not least, the Bavarian company has also prepared a flap silencer system that makes for more “intense perception of the engine sound.” It has two operating modes, Sport and Track, which can be set by Bluetooth remote control.

The M2 can also be fitted with M Performance coil-spring suspension that reduces ground clearance by “at least” five millimeters as compared to the standard suspension. The coil-spring technology can be used to lower the vehicle by an additional 20 mm, while the shock absorbers can be adjusted to 16 levels in the rebound stage and 12 in the compression stage. Further improving the vehicle’s track capabilities, BMW will offer sports brake pads that provide an improved, more direct response as compared to the standard brake system.

The M Performance parts will be available to order from March 2016.

CSL or GTS in the works?

Rumors of a meaner M2 have been swirling around the world wide web for quite some time, and while BMW has not confirmed any of them, now we have evidence that something hotter is indeed in the works. Spotted earlier this week at the Nürburgring (where else?) was a partially camouflaged M2 prototype going all out and sounding racy while doing it.

What to expect from a spicier M2? A combination of more power and less weight sprinkled with some aerodynamic bits and pieces to make the high-performance coupe a beast around any track. There have been conflicting reports about the car’s name, with some calling it “M2 GTS” while others have suggested the revival of the iconic “CSL” moniker.

Regardless of its designation, the powered-up M2 will likely end up as a special edition with a price to match, just like the sold-out M4 GTS. The latter ditched the rear seats for the sake of saving weight and that might happen with the beefier M2 as well if we were to rely on a report published by Auto Motor und Sport a few months back. According to the same folks, the turbocharged six-cylinder 3.0-liter engine will be massaged to deliver somewhere in the region of 408 horsepower (300 kilowatts) which would be a serious bump over the regular M2’s 365 hp (268 kW).

Details about the gearbox are scarce at the moment, so it’s unclear whether it will have the six-speed manual and the seven-speed, dual-clutch, or just one of the two. If BMW will pick just one, most likely it will decide to go with the M DCT which was probably the gearbox the prototype had.

As to when we will see the car, nobody knows, except obviously for the folks at BMW. The Bavarians are busy with the all-new 5 Series’ launch set for Paris next month, so it’s unlikely we will see it there. A reveal at some point in 2017 seems more possible, unless BMW wants to finish its centenary celebrations this year with a bang.

News on the M2 CS:

After seeing German tuners like Manhart and Lightweight Performance emptying the M2’s engine bay to make room for the S55 biturbo from the M4, BMW is expected to do the same in the near future. Latest gossip concerning the hardcore CS version suggests the model will be launched next year and is going to be produced in a limited series of only 1,000 units. If that’s correct, it means the M2 CS will actually be more exclusive than its bigger brother since the M4 CS is being built in 3,000 examples.

It’s not the only piece of information we’ve heard through the grapevine as apparently BMW will sell the ultimate M2 with a Silver Hockenheim paint and a striking Sunset Orange shade. Inside, there are going to be body-hugging sporty seats wrapped in black Dakota leather adorned with Polar Blue or Kyalami Orange contrast stitching. Customers will be given the opportunity to pick from regular or perforated leather, with the latter likely to command a premium.

Considering the standard M2 boasts 365 horsepower, the beefier CS is expected to up the power ante to approximately 400 hp to match the Audi RS3 Sportback and Sedan. Giving it even more muscle would be risky as the limited-run coupe would end up stepping on the M4 Coupe’s toes and we’re sure BMW doesn’t want that. Besides the rumored engine transplant, the flagship 2 Series model will also feature bigger brakes to match the extra oomph. Suspension and chassis tweaks together with other hardware optimizations are likely in the works as well to justify what will likely be a considerably bump in price over the regular M2, which kicks off at $53,500 in United States and from €59,500 in Germany.

As to when we will actually get to see it, BMW hasn’t said anything. As a matter of fact, there’s actually no official word about an M2 CS being in the works, though the company’s decision to trademark M1 CS through M8 CS names could be a hint. The order books will allegedly be opened in January 2018 and deliveries are slated to commence in May.
