First B9 RS4 test mule spotted...







The next generation Audi RS4 Avant has been spotted for the first time, but it’s only a test mule of the recently introduced S4 Avant.

It seems quattro GmbH boss Heinz Hollerweger was very serious when he said the new RS4 will come “relatively early in the production cycle” as the model has already been spied, even though the S4 hasn’t even reached dealerships yet. Speaking of the S4, the car seen here wears its body but seems to sit slightly lower and it also has some black plastic cladding on the wheel arches.

You can forget about the V8 4.2-liter naturally aspirated engine of the previous model as Audi has already confirmed the new RS4 will make the switch to a downsized turbocharged motor. It will likely use the S4’s new TFSI V6 3.0-liter where it develops 354 PS (260 kW) and 500 Nm (369 lb-ft) of torque. In the RS4, the engine is believed to receive e-turbo technology and corroborated with other tweaks this will bump output to an estimated 480 PS (353 kW).

The car spotted by our spy photographers was the more practical Avant body style, but the good news is Audi has already said an RS4 Sedan will be available right away and chances are both of them will be out towards the end of next year as 2017MY.

Ya that is a test mule so if it is the rs4 it would only have the RS4 drivetrain. Everything else is s4 avant with allroad flairs. Even the brakes look like s4 or A4.

Exactly it is a drive-train mule, although personally I think it gives the B9 some hope, a little lower and nice wheels and I think it is looking better, plus I think the Avant is nicer than the sedan.

In an interview with Autoblog at the TT RS’ launch, the man in charge with engineering at Audi’s Quattro division reconfirmed the demise of the naturally-aspirated 4.2-liter V8 for next RS4 and RS5. Instead, the cars are going to downsize to a turbocharged V6, but it won’t be Audi’s new 3.0-liter from the latest S4 and S5 models.

The RS4 Avant, RS4 Sedan (yes, it’s coming back), RS5 Coupe, and RS5 Cabriolet will be motivated by the Panamera’s biturbo 2.9-liter V6 mostly developed by Porsche with some input from Audi. It’s also set to power the entry-level R8 due to arrive in United States in 2018 based on a leaked roadmap, following what will likely be a Euro launch in the second half of 2017.

Details about output have not been disclosed, but in the Panamera 4S the engine is good enough for 440 horsepower (324 kilowatts) at 5,650 rpm and 406 pound-feet (550 Newton-meters) of torque attainable from 1,750 rpm. It remains to be seen whether the future RS-badged cars from Audi will have the exact same output, or if the high-performance models will get a different tune of the engine.

And now for the bad news, Stephan Reil revealed development of the turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with 420 horsepower has been terminated. Introduced back in 2014 with the spectacular TT Quattro Sport concept pictured above, the powered-up motor was rated at a fantastic 420 hp (309 kW) at 6,700 rpm and 331 lb-ft (450 Nm) from 2,400 rpm. One model that was supposed to get the beefy 2.0-liter was a production version of the VW Golf R400 concept, allegedly called “R420” to reflect the engine’s muscle.

While the engine itself will not find its way underneath the hood of a road-going car, the turbo 2.5-liter unit inside the 400-hp TT RS actually has more in common with the four-banger rather than its predecessor. Reil says only the bore and stroke are taken from the old five-cylinder engine, while a lot of the geometry is derived from the now defunct 420-hp four-cylinder motor.

Quattro’s development chief went on to specify the engineering and production costs of the four-cylinder engine would have been higher for Audi compared to the larger unit. In addition, Reil said at the end of the day that would still have been a four-cylinder unit, so it would have had a lower perceived value than the new 2.5-liter mill.

The power number for the rs4 are pretty good, just hope they make it sound bad ass. I said I'd never buy another b7 rs4 but I miss it so much.

Leaked details on the new RS4 and RS5:

A Motor1 reader has sent us an image, which we’re not allowed to use, with a slideshow from a dealer presentation in Norway concerning three upcoming RS models from Audi Sport: RS4 Avant, RS5 Coupe, and RS5 Sportback. The fact that the first two will share a biturbo 2.9-liter TFSI V6 engine from the new Porsche Panamera 4S is not exactly news taking into account Stephan Reil, engineering boss of Audi's Quattro GmbH division, revealed the important information back in September last year. What he didn’t tell us is the two will have more power and will be joined by an RS5 Sportback.

Indeed, the Panamera 4S has 440 horsepower (324 kilowatts) and 406 pound-feet (550 Newton-meters) of torque on tap, while the new RS models will have 450 hp (335 kW) and 442 lb-ft (600 Nm). That’s going to be enough Porsche power to enable the hot Audis sprint to 62 mph (100 kph) in less than four seconds and top out at an electronically capped 155 mph (250 kph), according to the slideshow. Buyers willing to spend more to reach higher velocities will be able to ask Audi to loosen up the limiter and allow the RS models reach 174 mph (280 kph) via the optional dynamic package.

The dealer also spilled the beans regarding when the cars are going to hit the assembly line. The RS4 Avant’s start of production according to the slideshow will be in December 2017, while next to the RS5 Coupe was written June 2017. According to our reader who was at the presentation, the RS5 Coupe is production-ready while the RS4 Avant is currently in the last stage of development. As for the RS5 Sportback, it’s not clear from the photo when it’s due to enter production, but it will arrive after the other two.

Based on the production dates we have, the RS5 Coupe could be unveiled in March at the Geneva Motor Show whereas the RS4 Avant might debut in September in Frankfurt.

You might not notice it, the car's handling and torque range can play a large part in how fast it goes, and the panamera engine is no slouch.
