The other day I noticed a weird squealing sound coming from the engine followed by a burnt rubber smell. Shortly thereafter I felt something give and fall out under the car as I was driving into downtown followed by my battery and airbag lights coming on.
Online diagnosis pointed to the serpentine belt shredding so had it over to the dealer to fix. What they discovered was that the tensioner pulley was the culprit, but it wasn't a case of the bearing in the pulley failing (as is often the case) rather, it was actually part of the tensioner itself that snapped. See pics below.
I got lucky that this didn't cause any collateral damage and I'm amazed that the metal actually snapped. Wonder if it was a case of it being a faulty part or if there was something else at play.
Regardless, a new tensioner and pulley are installed along with a fresh service and she's good as new (although I still need a carbon clean – Deuce, perhaps we should try to get a group discount somewhere haha)
