  • Unanticipated RS4 Maintenance

The other day I noticed a weird squealing sound coming from the engine followed by a burnt rubber smell. Shortly thereafter I felt something give and fall out under the car as I was driving into downtown followed by my battery and airbag lights coming on.

Online diagnosis pointed to the serpentine belt shredding so had it over to the dealer to fix. What they discovered was that the tensioner pulley was the culprit, but it wasn't a case of the bearing in the pulley failing (as is often the case) rather, it was actually part of the tensioner itself that snapped. See pics below.

I got lucky that this didn't cause any collateral damage and I'm amazed that the metal actually snapped. Wonder if it was a case of it being a faulty part or if there was something else at play.

Regardless, a new tensioner and pulley are installed along with a fresh service and she's good as new (although I still need a carbon clean – Deuce, perhaps we should try to get a group discount somewhere haha)

    Looks like metal fatigue.

    Could be a bad batch.

ouch! chris.. easy to fix at least and not timing related.. worst thing is you had to power steer the beast and shut off your radio

hopefully it didn't dent the wallet too bad either :/

Ugh! I hope the h*ll that doesn't happen to me... wowsers. Glad to hear that part didn't take a chunk out of your car... other than the chunk itself. Haha. If it were me... it would've probably came off... sliced the driver's front tire... ricocheted back up in to the engine bay and tearing off every hose imaginable before piercing through the top of the hood.

I'm booked in with George for the 30th. But yes... considering the cost (getting injectors replaced too) I could certainly use a discount!

Crazy! Looks like a pretty heavy chunk of metal to fail that way!

That does looks like a defect, no reason for fatigue to break that part so soon.

The wallet damage was a little higher due to taking it to the dealer, but not too bad ($375 for the tensioner + $50 for the belt + an hour's labour). I also had my service done at the same time while they were in there.

Going to book my carbon clean and injectors with George in the next few weeks!

PS –*Deuce, for your injectors you can order the generic ones online to save a bit of dough:
