Communication between the mechanic and the guy at the counter is not often that clear.... I could see the mech saying he wants to take it home, and that info not going anywhere. It's a bit a flaw in the dealer's system where the mechanic and customer never see each other. Both my mk4 and my Passat have gone home with mechanics for difficult diagnosis, but of course, I agreed to it.

I personally wouldn't agree to a mechanic taking my car driving it home personally.
Not on the clock, Audi can deny liability for it as well, especially if they are pretending like they don't know where it went. I would be pissed right off.
And saying that the dealer system is flawed because the mechanic wanted to take it home but didn't tell anyone? I mean i need more to this particular back story, but I don't think that should be allowed at all. If I am paying to have it worked on at the dealer then it should be at the dealers and worked on there.
This is yet an another example of just how awful glenmore Audi's service department is. In this example, the total lack of communication (lack of respect?) with the customer is indicative of the sense of entitlement that this service department consistently demonstrates to me. The only time they would buck up is when the police became involved.
It really is a shame that both audi dealerships in Calgary are owned by the same family.

Just saying I could see this happening, and perhaps the mechanic had no ill intent, and the service rep just failed to inform the customer of their plan.

Had a poor experience with Audi here too, needed to buy a part, called the parts department at least 5-10 times during the day and was always sent to the answering machine. Left a message but never heard back. Went in person and turns out they closed at 6:oopm despite their website saying 8:00pm. Talked to the manager and left hands empty. Went elsewhere to buy my part the next day.

I highly doubt any Audi tech is that stupid.
Like Stefan said, the tech probably told someone and was given a general answer like "I'm sure that would be fine" and then assumed it would be okay to take it home to diagnose and the customer was never contacted by mistake.
I would be upset too if this happened to me, but it sounds like the tech not following up enough when he asked to take it home to diagnose/a service advisor forgetting to do his/her job in asking the customer's permission.
Sounds like when Colin's car went in for an alignment and came back with a blown driver's side turbo. And they tried to argue it wasn't their fault lol

I can somewhat see the argument from both sides. Sometimes test driving a car home for the night can be required. Simply because techs don't have the time during work to spend hours driving one vehicle to see if a problem MAYBE reoccurs.
I'm not saying what was done is right, the customer should of been informed, and over the weekend may be alittle excessive. The dealership failed to handle the communication properly and got busted doing so.
Is this maybe getting blown slightly out of proportion...?
