  • Windshield Replacement Recommendations?

Heading home from Edmonton this afternoon and the RS4 took a SCUD missile to the windshield. The sound of the impact was like the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs. Well, probably.

Pics of the carnage below. In the course of 30 minutes the crack split 10 inches. Also took a chunk of paint off the rim of the roof. Boourns! :(

Any recommendations where I can get a good cheap OEM (or equivalent) replacement?

Crowfoot Speedy glass replaced my Jetta's windshield with OEM spec glass for $382, and the job was definitely speedy! Highly recommended!

Glassmasters quoted me $205 for my 2000 s4. I'm going with them as soon as I get a free Saturday.

Cal alta just off southland did my old f150 there is always a groupon for them too. I think it was in the low 200 range to get it done there.

I need a windshield for my rs4 as well so post up where you get it done.

Don't forget to ask where the glass is made regardless of where you go.

Cheap is cheap and will pit like crazy.

Crackmasters have been good to me up here in the city. My last car had the PO put in glass, was the cheapest he could find. Within one winter the glass was destroyed with pitting. I replaced it with more expensive glass and it lasted me 4 years.

You should be paying around $200 installed for any windshield. I think we've already had a thread about OEM vs non OEM glass. My opinion is they are equivalent.

Conversations with a local enthusiast who used to work for Crackmasters/chipmasters in the paint department said there is a difference between cheaper glass and Canadian made glass, regardless of OEM vs. Non OEM glass.

After owning both and having the higher quality glass last more that twice as long; in my opinion they aren't equivalent at all.

I'm confused... so you're saying the higher-quality glass lasted twice as long... but then you're opinion is that there isn't a difference between cheaper and more expensive glass? Huh?!

Let me know where you end up going Chris. I have not one... but two cracked windshields that need TLC this year.

FWIW... I will definitely be going with OEM glass. The VW has lasted 6 years with it's OEM windshield. The Audi... just over 2 years. And no... it wasn't OEM. Go figure. If you ask me... you get what you pay for.

Guess I should have been more clear. I was replying witchcraftz post saying they are equivalent. And in my opinion they are no where near equivalent.

Fixed my post to make more sense.

i'd say if you daily drive in calgary from oh november-june 1st your guaranteed to have chips on your windshield.. my s4 is still the OG one but i'm replacing it this spring.. allroad need a new one too

i'll buy the cheaper ones most likely as i'll be putting another one in each in 1-2 years again anyways

                              Re: Windshield Replacement Recommendations?

I've had excellent experiences with aftermarket glass so far.

On my Mazda 6 I got a "boulder" about 1 inch diameter into the windshield and it just left a small chip.
On the civic the glass lasted 4-5 years before the Calgary cold finally caused it to crack.
My Jetta has aftermarket glass and it's already taken quite a few hits from travelling around BC but no chips yet.

I'm sure a lot of OEM auto glass comes from China now, so whether it's a OEM or not, it's probably going to be decent quality.

I believe it's the installation that is the most important factor, if the installers use low quality glue, don't clean the seal, don't align the glass right so it's not resting against the base, and in general just do a slap it together job, your glass will have issues.

If I had a new 2014 Golf R where I wanted to keep the OEM logo on the glass, I'd get OEM glass, but as afar as my cars go, aftermarket glass has proved quite reliable and satisfactory.
