  • Custom turbo in a 3.2fsi engine

So I've been thinking of fabricating a custom turbo setup for the 3.2fsi engine and was hoping someone on here haS done
This kind of setup before . I was planning on using the ko4-022 turbo out of my jetta and making it work somehow. I've taken into account the internals ability to handle pressure and the audi engine internals are all forged if I'm correct. So if anyone ha s done this I would gladly appreciate some imput (:

Not with with turbo. 1.8 vs 3.2, it's going to spool up really fast and run out of juice real early. You would need a custom manifold, figure out how to mount it/where to mount it.

The time and money into it is not going to be something that is feasible for a student budget.

Thats likely way too small. Go gt28 something at least.

Plus I would be surprised if its a ko4, considering it didn't have forged internals when you checked.

2.7t swap would be cheaper, easier, and better.

the fsi engines are hard enough to tune for a bigger turbo if they already come turbocharged (2.0t). a 3.2 would be a nightmare

My GLI had a K04 with stock internals, it was just fine.

I know. Its just because the previous owner told him that it had forged internals, then once he removed the pan it had oem rods.

K04 is going to spool very very very early on, you will have instant boost for a bit but your pressure will drop severely towards redline because the turbo just can't supply the airflow you need. Even a gt2867 is going to be too small, that is almost instant boost levels for a 2.0 stroker. I would go 3071 for a 3.2 and still have very early on spool as well as being able to supply full boost til redline. It will be a costly project, a sweet one, but costly.

Ahh, Does the downpipe come off the side or bottom of the turbo?

Bottom and I just need to figure out how much pressure the internals could handle. But if they can take a load I'll go with a bigger turbo and do a scream pipe .
I'll know for definite if I have a ko4 within the next couple days when I get ripping into the car

If it is bottom it is probably not a K04-022. Only the K04-001 came in that configuration i do believe. Just going from memory...

If we are talking about the v6 3.2 FSI. Its super high compression 12:1.
Might need new bottom end to make it last.

Holy hell. You would need low compression pistons to turbocharge that properly.

And sorry onceover I looked at doing that but really want to keep the 3.2 engine because I have not found any that have this done to them

I know with the mk4 VR's you can simply add a thicker head gasket/spacer in there to lower the compression. Is it the same as in this application?
If not you will be pinging like crazy. Need to lower it to 9.5:1 or 9:1 or even 10:1 if you are a bit risky (if tuning is an issue don't do it)

I dont see why it couldnt be done, but you would need custom spacers made, unlike the ones that are readily available for VR's. For that additional cost you might as well do it right
