  • Crankcase breather ideas

I've been thinking of doing this to my new (old) s4 ever since I bought it, I've not had any issues with the stock set up but I think things can always be improved.

This is my stock Pcv system,

No plastic parts all rubber hoses and metal hard lines. But I have never liked the idea of returning oil vapours to the intake track.

My idea, my kids helped me draw it lol

I want to delete the Pcv valve and the valve going to the intake manifold as well. I was thinking either using a catch can setup, or just vent to atmosphere and block off the lines back to the intake tube.

    Thoughts guys....

    Catch can.

Vent to atmosphere is bad juju IMO.

Just be sure to get one you can drain.

What about an exhaust scavenger to suck the fumes back into the exhaust?

More info about people's set ups. Kind of skirts my issue with venting to atmosphere.

Their is a large amount of oil leaking around the compressor housing of the turbo, so much so, after being run rather spiritedly, oil leaks out of the oil filter. My attention was turned to the breather system. I did some research on S2 Forums and decided to scrap the OEM system and install a catch can. I welded a -10AN fitting to the valve cover and attached a -10AN fitting to the crank case that is routed to the catch can. Also I welded a -10 fitting to the bottom of the oil can and routed that line back in the oil pan, the other line is vented to the Atmosphere inside my wheel well to keep the nasty crank fumes out of my interior.

            Re: Crankcase breather ideas

Doesn't running a can/open atmo cause issues with the RMC due to it relying on negative pressure to maintain a full seal? Or was that just an old AEB thing?

Edit: wow, I read A4. Not S4. Never mind me...

The engine in question is an AAN.

              RMC?

Not valid, but I mean RMS (rear main seal). Phone corrected me.

Android auto correct seems to make up terms just to spite me.

These vortex separators like the ones I have been making and fooling around with work great. This kit gives you everything you need with no venting to atmosphere and drains back into the pan.

I have one of the 034 catch cans on my GLI and it works great. My only concern is draining this crap back into the oil system, have you seen the kinda stuff that can end up in the catch can? I would fit it with a plug and would drain it manually instead of putting it back into the pan myself.

                      This.

42DD has a nice one with a drain.

I like this but I agree with the post below about not draining back into the system. I had the 42DD on my old car and I would never want that in the crankcase. What about the valves? I know you (Bob) deleted all the valves on your b5 as I did as well, in theory I should be able to here too right? The 034 kit does not delete the valves.

Have a look at the link to Darin's thread, they talk all about how Hank designed his system and how Javad built the one for the Castrol Top Shop Challenge on the motor that ended up in the 80tq.

I drain mine into a reservoir on the S and the jeep but on the ACR i just have a brass stop cock on the end of the drain line. The 3/8 inch hose holds a lot of oil. Easy to drain from under during oil changes.

I can't imagine why you couldn't delete the rest of the system and cap the inlet to the manifold. I am not sure what that flame deflector plate does??
