  • Looking into a 2.7T need advice!!

    Hey guys,

Some of you probably know this already but I am going to be selling my mk4 and upgrading to a 2.7T B5 S4 (most likely) or C5 Allroad. I am repainting my GTI's hood and all the rubstrips to make it a little easier to sell and will be back up on Kijiji by Saturday.
Now, I'm hoping for advice on what to look for when buying these cars, best upgrades to start out with and most importantly.. How much work would it be to do a 6spd swap in either of these cars? I'm no mechanic (body guy lol) and would have no idea where to start. I have fallen in love with a 2000 s4 here in calgary in that rare metallic white and I went to see it and would give it a 9/10 for condition however it's an auto!! (Ugh) I know a couple guys here and there do the 6spd swap and this s4 is the ONE, so of any of you guys know a ballpark on what it would cost to get done (if I can locate the right transmission) and/or have experience with this please educate me!!
I have heard it's not good to even mod an auto because you run the risk of going into limp mode. And that's a huge problem because I want to do turbos, tune, y-pipe, intercoolers etc.. The whole shebang.
    Anyways would appreciate some help!!

    Thanks, Evan
    Evan

Re: Looking into a 2.7T need advice!!

I have done several 6 speed swaps, not too terribly difficult, expect about 20hrs total time, swap kits can be picked up for about 2K USD, or sourced from multiple suppliers for slightly less, but the shipping and headache might kill you.

As far as not modding an auto, that is pure ********, I never ran into any issues with my stage 3 A6 until I decided to be an ass in the snowy conditions and somehow managed to fry a transmission over revving it.

Our allroad was chipped when I bought it and has been stage 3 for 70k+ no trans issues
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

Perfect thank you! My biggest fear was not being able to find the right car with the right transmission but I was thinking of maybe even buying an auto on purpose because they tend to be less expensive and are great in te winter and pick up something fun for a project car to do a proper engine pull, shaved bay etc..
How much power were you making on your a6 with the fried transmission?

I've also heard if you do a tune you also need to re flash your transmission. Any truth to this?

Yeah haha I was thinking about it, first I have to sell my GTI and I would honestly prefer a stock 2.7T that I can mod on my own. Doesn't quite feel right buying a car that's already done

I don't know how the slush box in the 2.7 compares to the ZF in my car, but autos on a turbo car are pretty sweet. Your turbos stay spooled through shifts, so you actually accelerate harder then a stick. It might not me as fun, but to me atleast, that was a fair tradeoff. Just learn to brake boost through turns and you'll be in 24/7 boost land!

Back when I had my B5 A4 I almost traded for a B5 S4 auto, but at the time I didn't know there were any benefits to auto, I just thought it was for the non enthusiest bunch. You look on E90Post at all the 335's and the only guys who picked a stick is because that's what options the car had!

auto's only make for sh!tty drivers. set aside your purchase price amount for repairs. you're gonna need it lol
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

Personally I don't get why people get so mad about the auto vs manual issue. I've owned both and they both have their own strongpoints and I honestly miss my automatic. The only way I'll be actually satisfied is owning one of each! And the turbo staying spooled is one of those benefits!
