My buddy has a fairly built up B5 A4, similar to the one I used to have. This morning he went to start it and after must hesitation (-30!), it turned, and blasted thick black smoke out of the exhaust. There was actually liquid oil dripping from the tips. There was also oil burning inside of the engine bay (we can't find a source, but it was cooking on the hot side) because it was sucking into the cabin intake. We weren't sure what to think at first, maybe rings or valve seals? Turbo?
The weird part is... He gets in inside, lets it warm up in a heated shop, and starts it... All problems are gone. No more black smoke, no more oil leak. This is really baffling me, I've never seen cold cause something like this.
We are keeping an eye on it now, but any input into what it may have been would be awesome!
