  • 2.0T GIAC vs APR Tuning

My Dad has a 2012 2.0T A4 Avant and I keep bugging him about tuning it, seeing as he's kind of a gearhead (but a cheapskate) it shouldn't be too hard to convince him to get MOAR POWER!

That being said, does anyone have any input on either of these tunes? Looking at a stage 1 on an all stock 2.0T. He had his last A4 tuned with a GIAC by Tunerworks in 2004 and my mom still doesn't have a clue, so obviously he likes the GIAC and it never caused problems/was very reliable. However, the APR offers more power for a smaller cost.

Also, does anyone know anything about dealerships being able to know if your ECU has been tampered with? I mean, he hates going to the dealership anyways but having a warranty is always handy just in case. My boss had his turbo crack in his B8 and the dealership swapped a new one in for him for free.

    Thanks, Evan
    Evan

Well the Audi 2.0T has a different engine code than my car, but I can't imagine it would be all that much different when it comes to the tune. I have a GIAC tune and absolutely love it. It hasn't given me any issues in the 15 months or so that I've had and the car actually runs better than it did before it was tuned.

Exactly the confirmation I was looking for. Thanks Scott! I'm worried about the APR because the only person I know with an APR had it on his 1.8T and it caused all sorts of problems with random stalls, EPC lights etc.. trying to avoid that at all costs.

I've seen/noticed great results with Unitronic's chip tune on the 2.0t. Nice power band and solid reliability.

What about Revo? We've never had any problems with odd things after the tunes, super reliable and it's on sale till the end of Jan.

Go with whomever you feel is going to give you the best service and support. In all honesty most of the high end 'chip' tuners are going to offer 99% of the same program. You'd be lieing through your teeth if you said you could feel an extra 5hp or 4ft-lbs that one tune claimed over another. What really matters is how friendly and willing the shop that 'chipped' it is going to be, are they going to offer you free support if something goes wrong or are they going to charge you another 1hr of shop time? That being said, I've never ever seen a tune with an issue. If your buddies car is stalling, has the CEL light on all the time, etc his car is a POS and his tune just exacerbated his problems - they did not cause them.

As for the dealer knowing if it is tuned. the short answer is yes. Google TD1, we know within 10 minutes even if the tune is pulled now. Audi is pretty mean when it comes to chip tuning and warranty. It is done as soon as the scanner is activated we have no interaction with it.

Common misconception that happens quite often.

What actually happened with your friends car is that he had a bunch of issues he wasnt aware of that were only brought to light when extra power/boost/etc was added. APR is known for being conservative and rock solid.. ANY tune would have brought the same issues. Gotta make sure the car is 100% healthy before adding any major mod.

I've got an APR stage 2 tune on my 2.0T and I absolutely love it.
Have had it since march last year,
Its been rock solid and I drive the car hard.

I've got apr stage 2 on my 2012 a4 and I haven't had a single problem, I love it. I also had apr tune on my 13 gti for 25000km without issue.

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I'll pass on the info to my Dad and let him decide which shop and when. And yeah I didn't think there was much difference in power or torque for most stage 1 tunes I'm most worried about reliability but seeing as it shouldn't be an issue of the software it won't keep me up at night anymore lol.

Colin, how much are the revos on sale for?
