Because the car uses direct injection there's no fuel being pushed through the intake ports to clean the carbon coke out, it builds up constantly and reduces flow. Walnut blasting removes it.

It's a fairly new thing needed on direct injection BMW's and Mini's.

Walnut grinds. Because any other blasting medium would damage the metal in the head. The walnut media is harmless. It's sucked back out as not to get burned in the cylinders. Or they just pull the head. I'd rather not pay for that though.

Pardon me but it might be new for BMW but Audi was doing this in the mid 1990's on the 5000T so it is an old practice
I does a nice job cleaning the intake ports for sure, with out a lot of labour involved or parts cost.

I do believe Toyota also used it back in the late 80's or something to that effect?

I moreso mean it's new to BMW, it's obviously not a common procedure as most people have no idea what im talking about.

I know the A3 TSI or is it TFSI engine I can't remember has a bad problem with clogging of intake valves.

Most of them clean them by hand though.

Sounds like guys are using carb cleaner, or intake cleaner and a lot of time.

Some info and a lot of bs here:

And Walnut Blasting is commong for more than just intake valves. Being that it is a softer media than sand or bead blasting.
