  • VAG-COM scan, need help with audi b5.

Hey, I live in calgary NW. My car just got a flashing CEL, after heavy snowfall and I didnt drive it for a week or two.
Just curious if anyone can do a quick VAG-scan for me. willing to pay,
help me out please. the cars too risky to drive to a mechanic otherwise I would have.

    1999 Audi a4 2.8l facelift.

    PM me thanks guys.

No need to scan, flashing CEL is a misfire. Get it started and see if the flashing has gone away, it should have. Then you need to identify the failed coil pack

So I went ahead and started it. Upon first try it struggled to start at first turn, then it started, although the engine was very shaky the rpms were at 1700, and gradually dropped , however, it sounded like the engine had a really rough idle, and also alot of viberation. I quickly turned it off because I felt it would be deadly for the engine to leave it on.
could this be because of a coil pack or possibly a burnt cylinder head?

I think you are being really paranoid about this, those coilpacks are a known problem, likely one of them has failed.

Test by unplugging them individually while the car is running, the one that the idle doesnt change when you unplug it is the bad one.

When was the last time the spark plugs were done?

I was making an assumption that you would move in the direction that Colin outlined above. It sounds like a failed coil pack, follow Colin's directions and locate it

            I assumed it was a 1.8t. Didn't read.

Being the 2.8 it has one coilpack. They are a known problem, as are the wires. Start it and look at the coilpack, odds are it has a spark jumping from somewhere.

The 2.8 30valve has coil packs and they fail. Do the procedure Colin outlined.

I gotta say, I feel more confident that I can get it running back soon, specially in this whether we're having , Quattro would be lovely. I'm gonna do what Colin suggests and see what happens.

I had a misfire issue I drove on for a very short distance. Later, I threw codes for bad cats. Don't know if they are related, but be careful with it.

hey guys, I've decided rather than buying the OEM Ignition coil, I'm going to do a coil conversion to a 2.0T FSI coil packs.
Let me know your thoughts about this and if you know anything about it that might be helpful.

Out of curiosity, do i also need to buy new spark plugs, plus the conversion harness, and the 6 coil packs??

My previous spark plug was changed 13K ago, and they were BOSCH platnium + 4.

I was going to recommend the conversion! I'm doing it on my passat ASAP! If you are interested we could probably do an order at the shop to save on some shipping....

Spark plugs, I think you just keep stock, thats what I was planning on doing. Then yes, the coils and harness.

I'm definitely cool with that, I was thinking of getting red coil packs, if you know where to get those, that be awesome.
