Tranny and rear diff fluid...what to go with and where to get it?

Like the title states...what fluid is everyone using in their 01E's and rear diffs? Where can I buy it locally?

The last time I used Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 full synthetic. Hey did you do the 4:1 centre diff mod while you have everthing out? Best 70 bucks i ever spent.

Checked the spec and it says Redline MT-90 meets it. Says fill is 3.6L Transmission and 1.5L Rear Diff. You can get it from Calgary Autoworks or pretty much any shop if you call ahead.

CT and Parts Source carry amsoil. So does the Oil Dude. And the Oil Dude is a new B5 S4 owner. Good guy.

The Redline stuff is great stuff and Colin can hook you up.


Here is a few links to the Tor-sen Diff mod. Well worth it if you have everything out. Just turns the rear bias to what a new S4 or RS4 has. In the DIY link there is a link to a guy that sells the two shims that you use to replace two in the assembly. 70 bucks and another hour or so to do it.

Scotty at Advanced Automotion can hook you up with the diff mod for cheaper than Stasis or 034 would charge, he usually has one on the shelf too.

Regarding the diff/trans fluid, I'd suggest Motul. You can get it at any sport bike shop. Doesn't bind at cold temps like Redline.

Ya Scotty charges $275.00 plus a core charge of $300.00 then you have to shipping both ways to Canada (no free shipping for Canucks) on a 30 lb lump of steel, if you want the core charge back . The DIY is 70 bucks for the shims and 1-1.5 hours to install them. Shims ship in the mail in about 5 days. Scotty is 200 bucks cheaper that Stasis or the others and he cryo treats the internal gears, but unfortunately the the round trip will still cost you $475-$500 before taxes and duty.

Hmmm... when my pops got his diff upgraded, he piggybacked shipping with my crate RS2 trans, shipped up via freight. Plus he got a smokin' deal to begin with, so it came out ridiculous cheap.

I've been using www.freightquote.com (I've had the best luck with James Tilson, fwiw, he gets back to me promptly).

There are others, with a bid tender process... but I've yet to bother.
