  • And so it begins...allroad transformation

So I started working on the allroad on Sunday and got the engine/tranny out Monday afternoon. It is amazing how fast you can get at doing this when you've done it a couple times . This is now my 4th engine/tranny pull on a 2.7T (3 on the S4 and first on the ar). First time it took ~20hours, second took ~10, third ~8, and this time it probably only took about ~5 total working hours. It's a big job but not overly difficult...just a series of MANY small tasks.

Anyway, here are a couple mandatory 'gutted' shots:

After ~1 hour to get into service position (had a stripped bolt to deal with )

    After ~5 hours, everything out:

Plans are as follows and all parts are now in my hands:

01E 6-speed swap with RS4 clutch (fully rebuilt 01E from an A6 - no more ridiculous allroad gearing)
    BW K04's
    Custom fueling/tune
    3" DP's, bipipes, and K04 inlets
    RS4 intercoolers
17Z front brake kit and 034 300mm rear brake kit (using B5 S4 calipers)
Full timing belt kit with valve cover gaskets, cam plugs/seals, etc.
Numerous odds and ends (coolant tank, snub mount, motor/tranny mounts, etc., etc.)

If all goes to plan I hope to have the wiring part of the 6sp swap done this week, motor and new tranny mated, and everything sitting in the car by the end of the weekend. Once everything is situated properly and appears correct it will be on to the timing belt job. For some reason I am scared sh!tless about doing the TB after reading horror stories on other forum of people messing something up. I haven't done one before as I had George do my S4 while the engine was out last time...

Now I only have one question...I have a 'used' but in very good condition flywheel. I would still like to get it resurfaced just for piece of mind. Where in town does resurfacing?

    Updates will follow

haha, had a slight mishap, yes. Thankfully (I think) it was all coolant, just looks dark because it was fresh. Kitty litter to the rescue!

Before I got my lightweight flywheel I was looking to have my oem one resurfaced. If I remember Alberta Chrome and Grinding did them.

Block likes to hold coolant for when you pry up and out with the motor... at the perfect time to make a mess. When you have your hands full.

Hope to see some pics along the way, this is one of those swaps I dream about; always interested to hear the "little" details along the way.

                        One small update...

Haven't had any time to work on the car since last weekend but I managed to squeeze in a couple hours on Sunday. Old TIP shifter/pedals/etc. are now out of the car and the new pedals are in. I will say one thing about this, installing the pedals, clutch lines, etc. in the car is the biggest pain the f@cking ass I have ever dealt with! I would rather pull the engine any day than do this again lol. I swear to god Audi must have midgets working in the factory because it was nearly impossible to get my hands up under the dash to get everything installed. After countless expletives, bloody knuckles, and a few beers I got it all done...

                        3 pedal shot...almost there!

I dont know how you managed to do that with the dash still in. I had my parts car S4 and even with the dash out I said **** it.

It's not that tough really, once the lower dash/kick plate is removed things are pretty simple. One trick is to remove the drivers seat, only takes 2 mins and allows much more wiggle room
I may appear to be nice, but don't be fooled, I probably don't like you

It was lots of fun. Worst part by far was getting the clutch pedal clip in once the rest of the assembly was installed. Steps are basically this:

                              1. Remove old pedal assembly...yeah if it was only that easy. You have to take the brake booster completely out of the car to do this which includes back threading the brake pedal ball off of the booster from inside the car...which is SUPER easy to get at (NOT!)
                              2. Install HALF of the new pedal assembly. The clutch pedal has to stay off or it is physically impossible to get it in the car. I installed the gas/brake pedals half way with the brake booster bolts and didn't tighten anything down
                              3. Install clutch pedal loosely onto pedal assembly rod while at the same time clipping the clutch spring into place...the single most impossible thing for anyone with non-dwarf hands
                              4. Finally get to tighten all the bolts
                              5. Laugh at how long it just took you to do something that seemed so straight-forward.
                              6. Cry a little...

Moral of the story, this part of the job SUCKED...but it's done!
