  • Arp main stud question

So yesterday I picked up a set of main studs, I was told to use the BMW ones since the VW ones don't fit the car.

Are they supposed to be this long?? They are gonna stick way out.

Do I also need that plastic thing under the crank? There's a big black plastic Shell.

This is a 058 block AEB. Really need it back together now.

The black plastic thing you speak of is probably the windage tray... if so, you'll want that unless you're up for some oil pump starvation under aggressive cornering.

Regarding the main studs, I can't comment specifically for the AEB but I know the old school i5 motors had one that was specifically shorter to accommodate a check valve. Also, upon install one has to notch or recess the windage tray to fit over the new studs... but with plastic IDK wtf you'd do. Use a sanding cone to gain clearance maybe?

    Pics would help.

These are the wrong studs. They are for a 06A which had bigger bearing caps. My 058 needs the VW length ones. gettingt them swapped out today hopefully. The proper ones are way shorter.

Good to know I need the tray, it was a ***** to get on so I was gonna ditch it.

Its not that the VW ones wouldn't work, the VW kit and the BMW kit are identical and the BMW kit is $20 less or so. Unfortunately the BMW kit only works with 06A/B blocks.

If he keeps the stock main caps theres no reason for a line hone. Only if you swap out the caps.

Well, not really identical. Both are M10 yes, but the VW ones are 30mm shorter.

The BMW kit is identical to the 06A/B Block Kit.

Your kit is for an 058 block which uses shorter studs.
