  • Transmission swap question

This may be a dumb ? but Chris or someone will know

generally speaking is it even possible to say swap a new DSG tranny from a new audi/vw into a B5 S4 or older VW say? i don't know if it even mates up or all the electronics would flow nicely

    was just curious

    Re: Transmission swap question

Based on my recent research of engine swaps, i've come to realize almost anything is possible with enough time and money. Being that the B5 platform is getting up there in age, it would definitely not be an easy/cheap task. Did the B5's in Europe ever come with a DSG? If they did, that would probably make it alot more possible. Kind of like swapping a MK4 R32 to DSG

      This.

B5's never came with DSG as it didn't exist back when they were made.

Ahh ok. Wasnt sure as the R32's in europe were 2003 so only a year and a half off of the B5 S4's. Even though i'm a die hard manual transmission fan, I always wondered how it would feel to just have a constant pull of a 500hp car without the transmission slowing you down!

            Re: Transmission swap question

If you were not concerned about cost it could be done. A huge hurdle would be the ECU/ECUs and making all the systems work. Some of the issues with the Current DSGs is the limit of the engine output that can be used. The early VW/Audi transverse DSG only were designed for up to 260 lb-ft of torque. The top of the line current 7 speed transverse DSG is good for 370 lb-ft. The top of the line Audi longitudinal DSG is good for up to 440 lb-ft. That is why the current RS6/RS7 Audi, with its 560hp/516lb-ft, has a traditional 8 speed auto box as it was breaking the the 7speed DSG in testing.

034 has a much cheaper solution if you want to do a shifter delete on a b5.

or you could just install a DSG steering wheel and do that motorboat thing with your lips.
