  • 2014 BMW i3

The first pictures of the 2014 BMW i3 have leaked to the web, ahead of its debut on July 29th.

Looking instantly recognizable, the production model closely echoes the concept but adopts a new front bumper with revised head- and fog lights. The translucent doors have also been jettisoned for more conventional units that open rearward to improve access to the second row of seats.

Speaking of the cabin, it has a bold design which uses angular lines and unique materials. Notable highlights include a two-spoke steering wheel, metallic trim and freestanding iDrive and instrument cluster displays. There's also metallic accents and optional wood trim.

The entry-level model has a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery and an electric motor that develops 170 HP (125 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the hatchback to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, hit a limited top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph) and travel approximately 130 to 160 km (81 to 99 miles) on a single charge.

The range-extending variant has a similar setup but is equipped with a two-cylinder 650cc engine that acts a generator. It allows the model to travel up to 300 km (180 miles) before needing to be recharged or refueled.

The 2014 BMW i3 will be priced from €34,950 in Germany, £25,680 (after a £5,000 government grant) in the U.K. and $41,350 - excluding a $925 destination & handling fee - in the United States.

it's an abomination in my opinion. Leave these type of cars for the Japanese to make. What is that giant gear shifter/wiper lever/everything controller sticking out from beside the steering wheel?!? Doesn't appear to have become any more user friendly. I used to have a 328xi (07) and it was a nice car but I never found their its interior controls to be very self explanatory, i.e. not very user friendly.

I really hope they will keep making real cars in the future... I mean car manufacturers in general
