  • "Thor" Skid Plate for Allroad

I noticed my "previously loved" 2002 AR was missing its skidplate. That gave me a great excuse to pick up this one from Evolution Imports in Prince George, British Columbia. http://www.evolutionimport.com/

Total with shipping to Yellowknife was $392, well worth it considering the substantial piece that was delivered.

    The contents of the box

    Thick aluminium

    The hardware

Ready to get down to work

Rivet nuts slot into existing subframe

Rivet nut in the subframe. the instructions mentioned a "rivet nut install tool" which was a piece of aluminum to hold the nut (with bolt) in place during install. One wasn't included in my kit, but it wasn't needed as I was able to keep the nut flush for install with the socket.

    Outer "wings" bolted on

The instructions mentioned that "on all three Allroads we used for testing...these two mounts had buggered up threads." They provided details on how to "unbugger" them; luckily, I didn't have a problem. The mounts are on the front.

It took some jostling to get all the holes lined up, but it was still only a one-person job.

In place, waiting to have the last bolts installed and everything tightened up

    The finished product

Installation took about an hour with no serious problems. Aligning all the holes took the most time, but it wasn't a huge hassle.

I'm very impressed with the quality of the skid plate, and with the communication from the folks at Evolution Imports.

love the side bits. The evo plate I had on my MK4 TDI filled up with snow and ice as it had real protection on the sides. It would actually start clunking because the ice would build up and bang on the oil pan!
