  • Refinishing 3 piece Wheels (ie. iForged, HRE and the like)

Hey I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience refinishing 3 piece wheels? I'm thinking about refinishing a set of iForged in a different color. Anyone body have any idea of what I'm looking at in cost? Just wondering if its worth it or something that is easy enough to DIY. Another thing I was reading is that the rivets can't be resused which if it's true would add cost. I've called some wheel places but they said they need to see the wheels to provide a quote. Anyway any experiences would be appreciated.

    Cheers

Make sure that the wheels come appart . (many wheels look three piece but have been welded to ensure maximum strenth .. ie dpe and iforged) hardware can be reused and is expensive so use your descression on replacing them. Many older three piec wheel have verry unique barrels and can be hard to find replacments if yours are bent ...

      Was caps lock really necessary?

Not sure what you mean by rivets? Most 3 piece wheels are bolted together. It can be something you can DIY if you're willing to spend the time to do. Get the faces powder coated though, dont paint them.

Sorry I meant bolts. Have you ever had anything powder coated? Recommend any places? or approximate cost?

I recently went through all of this with my CCW's.

What finish are the wheel currently? What finish do you want?

Here is a basic outline of costs... assuming you do some work yourself.

-Take them apart yourself.. you will need the appropriate tools. (Socket sets, torque wrench, wire wheel to strip silicon, new siicon, drill, wire wheel etc)
-To chemically strip powdercoating: if you wanted them to be polished or anodized: $100 for all 4... I had mine done at Valley Metal. They were great and done within a week.
-To powdercoat: Most powdercoating places will strip and re-powder for ~$80 a wheel. Huge variety of colors
-To Anodize: $40 a wheel, but wheel must be stripped and near mint.. as imperfections show through
-To polish: depending on wheel condition, I paid $160 for all 4 faces to be done
-To repair rash: Estimate of $150 per wheel, (Alloy Wheel repair or Quiksilver wheel repair) if its small do it yourself with various grades of sandpaper and metal polish. Quite easy!
-To put them back together: Lots of videos online.. just takes time and patience. Tunerworks will actually do this for you if you want and they have time. Im sure other wheel places will as well..

My CCW bolts were reusable.. no idea about iForged. Most bolts are several bucks a piece.. so it can add up quickly if there are 20-30 per wheel. Either through the manufacturer or aftermarket.

I think thats about it.. if you have any other questions let me know, I spent a fair amount of time on mine this year.

Thanks R-Audi. Great break down of information.

Currently the wheels are flat black face and I think I want to go gold. Contacted Calgary Powder coatings and they said ~80 per wheel and 1.5 week turn around.
They have a bit of rash but I think that's something I'll do myself.

Only other questions is on the type of silicon to use? and how much do you torque the bolts to?

A cheaper alternative is just hit em with some plasti dip...

CCW recommended GE Silicone II Window & Door Sealant- Stock No GE5000 (Clear), with the bolts torqued to 22lb ft. Id look into the spec from the company as Kinesis and Fiske require ~18 as they use smaller bolts.

CCW's website has some good instructional videos:

                http://www.ccwheel.com/incs/technica...air_video.html

Or this small write up on Rennlist:

                http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...nesis-etc.html

Good thing with a place like Calgary powdercoating as they include stripping the wheel in the $80. Its something they wouldnt do separately...

Off topic but R-Audi is that you who brought your CCW's to Tunerworks the other weekend?

Nice, i didn't know you were on here. I'm the guy who put on your tires...unless there was a problem, then the other guy did them.

I looked into powder coating and decided against it. From what I found out, forged wheels are made with a more brittle alloy than cast wheels, if the powder coating place heats the forged rims to the same temperatures as they use for cast rims or other metals, it will create extra metal fatigue and cause the rims to become more likely to crack. Forged rims need to be baked for a longer time and at lower temperatures.
