In the seemingly never ending saga to sort out my non-functioning ABS i finally decided once again to spend a little quality time with the s4 last night.
Originally when the ABS failed it was shortly after engine pull and axle replacement. ABS work intermittently then died altogether where it stayed.
I did some poking around, knowing ABS modules fail constantly and are a) expensive to replace but b) you can send them to a few places to get fixed.
Having the bastard child 2001.5 s4 it was annoying as my ABS module was different than anyone elses and i could never get a good response on whether it was replaceable.
Fast forward to last night:
did some digging, i do in fact have the bosch 5.0 module which is very different than most of you will have. its partly due to the fact i have ESP, so the pump is in the engine bay and module is under the rear seat. Part # 8e0614111A.
I then started doing some reading and people say these almost never fail due to being relocated, so the usual response of "its you ABS module thats failed" may not be the right diagnosis.
So i looked at what else would cause the error code.
One of hte things that comes up is wheel speed sensor. And now i dont know how to determine a) which wheel, and b) why it would have failed
Could this be mechanical? If so how does one check?
Could this be electrical? If so how does one check?
When i run VAG-Com on the car for codes it can't even get past the ABS control check.....so does this change the thinking that its speed sensor related?
Sad part is my module isn't fixable for cheap, and requires a fully new one from Audi for a nice chunk of change, so i'd like to rule out the low hanging fruit before i simply order one.
