Can still get the S4 and S5 in manual so... I don't see the point in dreaming about this one.

Especially since a 1 year old S4/S5 probably comes to the same price as a new S3

Not sure where the no manual came from, but this other info says there are options and also there will be base A3 versions as well beside the S3. With a reveal in NY and the previous new A3 (3 door and sportback) platforms being shunned for NA, it appears the sedan is going to be a big push from Audi in this market, and the dimensions are pretty close to a B5.


Set to go on sale this spring, the sedans have a familiar appearance but eschew the hatchback for an American-friendly trunk. Overall, the sedan measures 175.5 inches long, 70 inches wide and 55.7 inches tall with a wheelbase that spans 103.4 inches. This effectively makes the model about the same size as the original A4 that was launched nearly two decades ago.

The S3 is distinguished by modified bumpers, revised side skirts and a trunk-mounted spoiler. Designers also added faux aluminum mirror casings and a sport-tuned suspension that reduces the ride height by 25mm.

In the United States, the A3 will come nicely equipped with leather upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, a panoramic sunroof and an MMI infotainment system a seven-inch display. Options include LED ambient lighting, a Bang & Olufsen audio system and 4G/LTE connectivity.

Under the hood, a variety of different engines will be available including:

A 1.4-liter TFSI with 140 HP (103 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque
A 1.8-liter TFSI with 170 HP (132 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque
A 2.0-liter TFSI with an undisclosed output
A 2.0-liter TDI with 150 HP (110 kW) and 320 Nm (236 lb-ft) of torque

Since the previous generation did not do so well in terms of sales in NA, they seem to think the sedan is a better fit for the market and should be dropping the hatch from the lineup.

Width: 72.8 in vs 70.0 in
Height: 55.8 in vs 55.7 in
Length: 176.5 in vs 175.5 in
Wheelbase: 103.0 in vs 103.4 in

So very close to the size of a B5 S4 this new S3 will be and about 10 inches shorter than a B8 S4.

I think it looks like a great car, just wish there was the hatch options as well in NA and interested to see what platform(s) is used for the RS3 variant.

Just read that it will be coming out with a 2.0L TDI engine.

The A3 will launch in Europe before it comes to North America, and will offer a three-engine lineup when it does. All three mills are of the four-cylinder variety, with a 2.0-litre TDI offering 150-horsepower and 236-pound-feet of torque, a 1.4-litre, 140-hp and 184-lb-ft TFSI, and a 1.8-litre, 180-hp and 184-lf-ft TFSI. The diesel motor is expected to return roughly 4.1 L/100km (57 mpg) on the combined European cycle, the 1.4 and 1.8 engines will offer 4.7 L/100km (50 mpg) and 5.6 L/100km (42 mpg), respectively. 0-100 km/h times will range from 7.3 seconds for the 1.8 TFSI, to 8.7 for the TDI. As of this writing, the expected powertrain lineup for North America is still unknown.

There will be a TDI, it will just be an A3 not an S3, you should see a couple of engine and trim choices when it arrives.

I have spent a few minutes in the interior of a new A3 Sportback and I personally love the clean simple layout and think it is a very nice place to be.
